A. Using appropriate research strategies, describe a social or global issue that is related to wellness.
Introduction:
A: Analyze how social practices have shaped our idea of wellness and how that idea of wellness has shaped social practices.
Wellness is not a new concept, but it is something that is being taken more and more serious today. According to the global institute of wellness states that they have knowledge of people practicing wellness all the way beck to 3,000 BC. (History of Wellness. (n.d.)) In today’s world of wellness we have learned that wellness is not only about our body’s but multidimensional. Wellness ha shaped our society, in the way we eat, exercise, and even socialize.
B: Utilizing interdisciplinary approaches, explain how a topic discussed in this course has or has not shaped our idea of wellness.
A topic that I believe that has shaped our idea of wellness is the art discussion. Art has shaped our society. I talked about how coloring helps those with anxiety and can calm the mind putting the one who is coloring into a meditation state. (Moss, R. (2014, October 07))
C:Analyze how the importance (or lack thereof) of wellness and health in society has been a force for social change. In other words, has an emphasis or lack of emphasis on wellness in society sparked change in the everyday behavior of individuals or societies?
Yes, it has most definitely sparked social change. The wellness industry today is huge, and larger than ever. The meditation, multiple different yoga classes, exercise classes, are everywhere, now more than ever. People are very intuitive to being involved in wellness trends and becoming more and more healthy and having a better outcome in life.
D: Analyze how wellness has influenced the behaviors and operations of individuals in your discipline of study or area of interest. In other words, look at the influence of wellness through the lens of your discipline.
Within the hospital they do have some classes here and there for employees to go to. I think this is much better than it was, I know that they did not have these programs back then and even some smaller hospitals do not have classes for employees to attend too for stress management. But I believe that in a stress prone, fast paced environment it is extremely important to have stress management classes. These classes include, yoga, meditation, Zumba, and really anything that involves moving the body and relaxing the mind. (Employers turn to resilience-building programs to cut worker stress. (n.d.))
E: Utilizing interdisciplinary approaches, explain the positive and negative aspects associated with a topic that has been discussed in this course. Using relevant research or diverse perspectives, assess how emerging technologies have the potential to improve personal and societal wellness.
Positive and Negative:
I believe that having a good aspect on the topic of exercise is great for the overall wellness. Exercise is great for one’s mind, helping relieve stress, anxiety, and I’ve even found an article where it says that regular exercise has a correlation with Alzheimer’s. If exercising everyday eliminated Alzheimer’s, I believe we all would be out and moving our body’s. Although too much exercise can be bad for the body, especially if we do not know how to move in the right way. Moving the body, a certain way can really do a lot of damage.
Technology
The Apple Watch, Fitbit and many other technologies based advances are a huge improvement to wellness. I, myself have an Apple Watch and it can track my sleep, my stairs, walking, heart rate and so on. Hosts such as YouTube also allow those to post videos for people to watch. On YouTube you can find yoga videos, cooking recipes, exercise moves and so much more.
Issue:
A. Using appropriate research strategies, describe a social or global issue that is related to wellness.
What is the origin of the issue? What is the issue about?
The origin of the issue has been around since we started working. Companies have been overworking employees since companies first become companies. I have heard of companies in Japan have overworked their employees to death. “We’re seeing that approximately 75 percent of workers are disengaged, and it’s costing the economy an enormous amount of money in stress and turnover.” (Gregoire, C. (2016, November 22)).The issue is about stress management at the workplace and what employers need to start incorporating for their employees.
B:Using appropriate research strategies, describe the target population of the issue.
Who is impacted by the issue? What is important to know about them?
According to stress.org 80% of workers feel stress at their job and half of them want help to manage that stress. “80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help” (Workplace Stress. (2017, March 14)). There is much need for help especially in todays faced-paced workplace environment. It is important to know that employers need to be able to help the employees to whom they are stressing out.
C: Using appropriate research strategies, explain how the chosen issue relates to a topic that has been discussed in this course.
How can you connect the social or global issue you have chosen with a topic that has been discussed in this course? How does it inform your understanding of the issue?
Stress within the workplace has a lot of issues with wellness. Stress on your body can include body pain, headaches, fatigue, sleep problems. Not only does stress affect your body but also your mind and spirit such as, sadness and depression, anger, anxiety, and restlessness. The behavior is also changed because of stress, overeating, social withdrawal, drug or alcohol use, tobacco use, and angry outbursts. This all has to do with the eight dimensions of wellness.
D: Using relevant research or diverse perspectives, assess how the chosen issue is impacting the target population.
The stress at work is impacting their social lives, their body’s and their behaviors. Making them feel tired and like they are just spending their life at work and at their job.
E: Utilizing interdisciplinary approaches, predict how the chosen issue will or will not change in the future. Be sure to justify your prediction.
I believe that the issue has become known and also known to those in the economy field and will get better. Companies with large turnover is costing them and the local economies, most companies do not want to spend money if they do not have too.
Plan
A: Make recommendations for how the current issue could be addressed so that it no longer adversely affects the target population.
What strategies or steps could be taken to help the individual who are adversely affected by the chosen issue? How could these recommendations be implemented so that a new population is not adversely affected?
If financially available they could get into a job that they love, and enjoy fully. Even though you are going to work, enjoying the job would be significant. Another recommendation would be to do home remedies, and keep a schedule to stick to. Yoga, meditation, a 30-minute walk with the dog after walk, really anything to help get out and about, and relax the mind. The internet and social media are great tools if you want to try something new. I believe that corporations need to implement such classes so that the next generation can be able to take stress seriously.
B. Explain the strategies that could be utilized to address the chosen issue.
Employees could start their own groups, by staying later and getting managers and executives involved. If they can show how it can be effective and how other employees will use these classes, then the company might start funding it.
C: Imagine you are in charge of addressing your chosen issue. Utilizing interdisciplinary approaches, explain how you would implement your plan.
If I was in charge I would show my boss that not only is the stress management programs beneficial to the employees but also a money saver for the corporation.
D: Explain the benefits of your plan and justify why your plan would be preferable. Be sure to support your justification with relevant research or individual perspectives.
I would set up a class where most employees would enjoy, and this would allow the boss to see that it would be worth the cost. I then would explain that it would save the company money between turnover rate and people being unproductive at work. “Employees with high well-being have 41% lower health-related costs compared with employees who have lower well-being. In a firm that has 10,000 employees, this difference amounts to nearly $30 million” (Gallup, I. (2012, May 22)). The happier and less stressed the employee the better your company and the better your employees.
