An obvious place to look for explanations for booksellers’ struggles is the electronic bookallmore, or “e-book”. However, e-books would presumably impact booksellers to the same degree. Yet traditional booksellers are struggling than either big-box retailers or local/independent booksellers. There must therefore be something more to the story of what’s happening in book retailing.

Employ a population ecology perspective to explain why traditional booksellers specifically are struggling to survive. That is, explain the properties of the social space in which traditional booksellers are attempting to compete, and why traditional booksellers’ blueprint does not “fit”.
