Leadership

Humble Leadership

            Leaders lead by example.  To be a good and effective leader it is important to lead others by example.  It is important to be humble, kind and loving to others.  If leaders only care about dollars and power and not their employees and coworkers, then the people around them will feel that.  The people they are trying to lead will not be open to their leadership and request.  If the leader is really humble and working for the good of all involved the people will be more willing to help and be good followers.   Humble people know that they have skills and talents but they also know that they have limitations and this keeps them humble (Ou, Tsui, Kinichi, Waldman, Zhixing, & Jiwen Song, 2014, p.38).  

            The Bible teaches that the Lord is in control of all things.  The Bible says in 1 Samuel 2:7, “The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts” (NIV).  The Bible also gives another example in 2 Samuel 22:28, “You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low” (NIV).  The Lord wants His followers to be humble in all things.  Being humble and serving others is important in Christian leadership.  

Leadership Traits

The Bible teaches many good leadership traits.  It teaches leaders to be humble, givers, loving and have integrity.  The Bible says in Hebrews 13:16, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God” (ESV).  A good leader should lead with love.  “A leader who tries to lead without love will turn around one day and find there is nobody following” (Wooden and Jamison, 2005, p.89).  The book “Developing the Leader Within You” by John C. Maxwell talks about integrity being the most important ingredient of leadership (Maxwell, 1993, p.35).  The book says “when I have integrity, my words and my deeds match up.  I am who I am, no matter where I am or who I am with” (Maxwell, 1993, p.35).  These are all traits that are important in being a good leader by serving others.  Christians must follow Jesus’s example and serve others first.  There are examples of this all throughout the Bible.  Serving others, teaching others, and leading others to learn about Christ is the most important thing Christians can do.  Servant leaders understand and values his or her followers (Smolenyak and Majumdar, 1992, p.28).  

Relying on Jesus’

            The Bible teaches that the Lord is who gives everything.  The Lord gives the knowledge and skills to be a good leader.  The Bible says in Deuteronomy 8:17-18:

And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.  But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. (KJV)  

The Bible also gives many examples of how to live and how to be a great leader.  If a Christian does not seek the will of the Lord and does not follow his example this will not be pleasing to Him.  In order to be successful in reaching people and leading them to Christ it is important to seek His will first.  Every Christian should be not only leaders in business but also leaders in life and trying to reach people for Christ.  The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:11:

If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. (NIV)

This verse sums up how Christian leaders should be.
