Avoidance Groups and Conformity
Reference groups impact your buying decisions both positively and negatively. In most cases, you model your behavior to be in line with what you think the group expects you to do. This is your choice towards adapting to the subculture of the group. Sometimes, however, you also deliberately do the opposite of the group’s cultural behavior if you want to distance yourself from what are called avoidance groups. You may conform to a reference group culture, and you may avoid other group cultures. This Assignment helps you learn about your own purchase decisions being made to avoid a group based on their cultural behavior.
Although you may observe conformity in many settings (just remember high school), you do not always mimic others’ behavior all the time. In many instances, you might avoid a group.
• Describe the behaviors for one of your avoidance groups. Explain why you would avoid the group’s perceived cultural behavior (definition of avoidance group from the text).
• What types of products does the avoidance discourage you from purchasing?
• Considering those same products, describe a conformity reason (cross-culture conflict) why you might consider making the purchase in spite of the avoidance groups cultural influence.
