- Pick one ancient primate species (e.g. proconsul) or an ancient primate group (e.g. adapids) from the
Eocene, Oligocene, or Miocene (all animals before the Eocene are still in debate). For example:
Gigantopithecus blacki; Megaladapis; etc. The idea is that it should be an accepted primate species, not
one that still in debate (like the ones from the Paleocene!)
- Research the ancient primate skeletal features, body size, geographic location, presumed behavior
and dietary requirements.
- Do some research in the internet and: Select a modern-day primate species or group that for you
closely resembles to your chosen ancient primate or group. You need to research its features as described in
Classify your primate in the correct category: prosimians, monkeys, lesser apes, or great apes.
- Compare both primates, find their similarities and differences.
- Justify your pick based on your research and use the following questions to develop your essays:
Why do you think your chosen modern primate/primate group is similar to your chosen ancient
primate/primate group? Are there any differences? Do you think see a relationship between them? Could one be the ancestor of the other?
Answer these question in your essay. You must use your research to support what your argument.
