Thanks for agreeing to come onboard this project. As I mentioned to you, I made

a hybrid between wheat and barley using a special procedure. I’m calling this hybrid

Warley1. Since then I have been able to increase the diversity to 10 different genetic

lines and multiply enough seeds for testing.

I believe Warley has potential to become a major staple food. It has substantial yield

compared to current commercial wheat varieties. It’s possible that it can replace wheat

as the staple food! I conducted the trials at 3 locations testing 10 Warley testing lines.

I have yield measured in tonnes per hectare in the attached file. I want you to analyse

this data to find out the best Warley lines.

I also need to start planting for my next experiment so could you generate an experimental

design for the next one? The layout for the next experiment is the same as this

one, i.e. locations are Narrbari, Northstar and Horsham and I have a land with plots

laid out in a rectangular array of 5×4, 5×8 and 10×10 available. I want to test the top

two lines from this data in the next experiment and also I will have 3 additional new

lines. I should have enough seed to sow 40 plots for each lines.

Several years ago, Penston Company purchased 90 percent of the outstanding shares of Swansan Corporation. Penston made the acquisition because Swansan produced a vital component used in Penston’s manufacturing process. Penston wanted to ensure an adequate supply of this item at a reasonable price. The former owner, James Swansan, retained the remaining 10 percent of Swansan’s stock and agreed to continue managing this organization. He was given responsibility for the subsidiary’s daily manufacturing operations but not for any financial decisions.

Swansan’s takeover has proven to be a successful undertaking for Penston. The subsidiary has managed to supply all of the parent’s inventory needs and distribute a variety of items to outside customers.

At a recent meeting, Penston’s president and the company’s chief financial officer began discussing Swansan’s debt position. The subsidiary had a debt-to-equity ratio that seemed unreasonably high considering the significant amount of cash flows being generated by both companies. Payment of the interest expense, especially on the subsidiary’s outstanding bonds, was a major cost, one that the corporate officials hoped to reduce. However, the bond indenture specified that Swansan could retire this debt prior to maturity only by paying 107 percent of face value.

This premium was considered prohibitive. Thus, to avoid contractual problems, Penston acquired a large portion of Swansan’s liability on the open market for 101 percent of face value. Penston’s purchase created an effective loss of $300,000 on the debt, the excess of the price over the book value of the debt, as reported on Swansan’s books.

Company accountants currently are computing the noncontrolling interest’s share of consolidated net income to be reported for the current year. They are unsure about the impact of this $300,000 loss. The subsidiary’s debt was retired, but officials of the parent company made the decision. Who lost this $300,000?

Learning how to manage confidentiality with groups is a challenging task for counselors. However, working with special populations is an even bigger challenge for counselors. In the following case study, you will learn not only about the challenge of confidentiality in groups but also about working with minors when breaches of confidentially may be needed.

Case Study:

You have been contracted by a local school district to conduct a counseling group for a group of high school girls who have been labeled “at risk.” During one session, the group members begin discussing their sexual activities.

One of the group members, a 14-year-old girl, discloses she has been dating her boyfriend for 4 months and they are sexually active. After some discussion, she sheepishly admits they do not use protection when sexually active and she suspects her boyfriend may have passed on to her a sexually transmitted disease. Her boyfriend has been her first and only sexual partner.

However, she excitedly states they are in love and plan to get married someday. She also says she is afraid of her parents finding out because she thinks they would be so mad that they would kick her out. Later in the session, this group member adds that her boyfriend is 18 years old.

Tasks:

Using the ethical decision-making model, outline your response to this situation. Be specific. You may respond (and are encouraged to respond) in an outline form (i.e., develop a response to each ethical decision-making step):

  • As part of the specific steps involved in your ethical decision-making process, identify the following in a minimum of 250 words:
    • The specific elements and process of informed consent for this situation (e.g., disclosing limits of confidentiality, theoretical approaches, duty to warn, etc.).
    • The manner in which you would ensure informed consent was appropriately obtained.
    • Your ethical obligations to the community and society (on the basis of the state in which you are located) and the implications of these ethical requirements (e.g., mandated reporting requirements).
  • Finally, discuss your reflections upon your “personal ethical evolution” during this term (i.e., thoughtfully examine how your perspectives about ethics have changed, evolved, been enhanced, etc.).
