Before completing this assignment, be sure to read the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007) provided in the Module/Week 1 Reading & Study folder. Your assignment must be 3–4 pages, not including the title page or the reference page, and include the articles on the reference page. This assignment will give you an introductory look at current APA format and research in Psychology and will help you plan for success in this course.

Part 1—Create a title page.

1. Create a title page using current APA format, and include the title of your paper, your name, your university affiliation, a running head, and page numbers.

2. Use the following pages of this document as a guide for what the style should look like for the pages of your document.

Part 2—Write a 3–4-page paper that addresses each of the following components.

1. What have you learned about factors related to success in online education from reading the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007)?

2. How can you specifically incorporate these factors related to online success in this course?

3. Roper (2007) indicated that students who were successful noted that they designated (in advance) specific times to read, complete assignments/quizzes, and interact with classmates. Using this as a foundation, develop a specific weekly plan that you can follow that details when you will complete the requirements of this course. Include each of the following in your plan:

o Review the requirements outlined in the Syllabus and Course Schedule and write a weekly plan/timetable that designates times when you will read each module/week, when you will review/study, when you will complete discussion boards/assignments, and when you will complete quizzes.

o Reflect on your roles and responsibilities to family, work, and life, and discuss how those will interact with the fulfillment of your plan outlined above. Describe your plan for designating time to this course considering those responsibilities. 

o Create a table that outlines a sample module/week and how you have designated time to your varying responsibilities.

NOTE: Be realistic in your planning, but also know that success in this course will require that you carve out and dedicate time to reading, studying, and completing quizzes and assignments.

Part 3—Create a page for references.

1. Create a reference page for the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007). 

2. Use current APA format for the heading and style of the references. See the following pages of this document for a guide for what the style should look like.

As a nurse engaged in evidence-based practice, it is important to recognize how statistics and other data analysis tools are used to generate and assess evidence. Most nurses need only a foundational understanding of statistical tools and terminology to understand the majority of research studies. As a nurse, you should be able to recognize the most commonly used statistical tests, how and when they are used, and how significance is determined.

In this Discussion, you examine different types of statistics and statistical tests, when and why these particular tests would be selected for use, and, most importantly, what the results indicate. To this end, you will be assigned to a group by Day 1 of this week. Each group will be assigned one of the five chapters listed in this week’s Learning Resources and will develop a study sheet on their chapter that will be shared with the other groups.

  • Review the information in your assigned chapter.
  • As a group, develop a 1-page study sheet that includes      the following:
    • The key concepts of the chapter: Focus on the basic       concepts that are important for nurses to understand as they review       research studies.
    • A description of the statistical methods covered in       the chapter, what they measure, and under what circumstances they are       used. Identify examples of how the statistical methods have been used in       research studies.
    • An explanation of the key statistical tests and how       they measure significance (if applicable).

Note: This should be a collaborative effort, with each member of the group making contributions to the design and content of the study sheet. Use the Groups link on the left navigation bar to collaborate with your group. When you have developed your 1-page study sheet, select one member to post it to the Week 9 Discussion Forum so that the rest of your colleagues can access it.

To prepare:

Post your group’s study sheet. Discuss why it is important for nurses to understand the basics of these statistical methods.

Dr. Daniela Yeung, a community psychologist, has been conducting a federally funded ethnographic study of men’s attitudes toward intimate partner violence following conviction and release from prison for spousal abuse. Over the course of a year, she has had individual monthly interviews with 25 participants while they were in jail and following their release. Aiden, a 35-year-old male parolee convicted of seriously injuring his wife, has been interviewed by Dr. Yeung on eight occasions. The interviews have covered a range of personal topics including Aiden’s problem drinking, which is marked by blackouts and threatening phone calls made to his parents and girlfriend when he becomes drunk, usually in the evening. To her knowledge, Aiden has never followed through on these threats. It is clear that Aiden feels very comfortable discussing his life with Dr. Yeung. One evening Dr. Yeung checks her answering machine and finds a message from Aiden. His words are slurred and angry: “Now that you know the truth about what I am you know that there is nothing you can do to help the evil inside me. The bottle is my savior and I will end this with them tonight.” Each time she calls Aiden’s home phone she gets a busy signal.

Ethical Dilemma

Dr. Yeung has Aiden’s address, and after 2 hours, she is considering whether or not to contact emergency services to go to Aiden’s home or to the homes of his parents and girlfriend.

Discussion Questions

Why is this an ethical dilemma? Which APA Ethical Principles help frame the nature of the dilemma?

Does this situation meet the standards set by the Tarasoff decision’s “duty to protect” statute? How might whether or not Dr. Yeung’s state includes researchers under such a statute influence Dr. Yeung’s ethical decision making? How might the fact that Dr. Yeung is a research psychologist without training or licensure in clinical practice influence the ethical decision?
