Assignment 4: Current and Future Economic Issues Impacting Healthcare Sector

Due Week 10 and worth 240 points

Use the Internet or Strayer online databases to research five (5) of what you believe to be the most important and pressing economic issues that confront the United States healthcare industry today and will continue to do so into the next decade.

Provide a review of these issues in a ten to twelve (10-12) page paper in which you:

  1. Provide a detailed description of the issues that you have researched.
  2. Analyze the most significant economic effects of the researched issues on healthcare industry. Provide at least two (2) examples of these issues to support your response.
  3. Suggest specific strategies that relevant entities / stakeholders may use to address the selected issues from an economic perspective. Justify your response.
  4. Determine the strategic manner in which the United States can apply best economic best practices from other countries in addressing these issues.
  5. Assess the likelihood of government and or private sector effectively addressing the issues.
  6. Use at least ten (10) current references. Five (5) of these references must be from current peer-reviewed sources to support and substantiate your comments and perspectives.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze the factors that are influencing the demand and supply of health care services in the U.S.
  • Compare and contrast the U.S. health care system with the health care system of other countries.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in health economics.
  • Write clearly and concisely about health economics using proper writing mechanics.

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic / organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using the following rubric.

For this Assignment, you apply systems theory to the examination of a problem in a department or a unit within a health care organization. (Note: You may use the same problem you identified for the Discussion as long as it meets the criteria for this assignment.)

To prepare:

· Review the Meyer article, “Nursing Services Delivery Theory: An Open System Approach,” in this week’s Learning Resources. Focus especially on the information presented in Table 1 (p. 2831) and Figure 2 (p. 2833).

· Reflect on your organization or one with which you are familiar. Within a particular department or unit in this organization, identify a problem the staff is encountering.

· Using Table 1 in the Meyer article as a guide, analyze the department or unit, identifying inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback. Consider whether the problem you have selected relates to input, throughput, output, cycles of events, and/or negative feedback.

· Think about how you could address the problem: Consider what a desired outcome would be, then formulate related goals and objectives, and translate those goals into policies and procedures.

· Research professional standards that are pertinent to your identified problem.

· Reflect on the organization’s mission statement and values. In addition, consider how addressing this problem would uphold the mission and values, while improving the organizational culture and climate. (Depending on the organization you have selected, you may have explored these in the Week 1 Discussion.)

To complete:

Write a 3- to 5-page paper (page count does not include title and reference page) that addresses the following:

· Describe a department or unit within a health care organization using systems theory terminology. Include a description of inputs, throughput, output, cycles of events, and negative feedback.

· Describe the problem you identified within the department or unit using an open- systems approach, and state where the problem exists using the systems theory model (input, throughput, output, cycles of events, or negative feedback).

· Based on this information, explain how you would address the problem as follows:

o Formulate a desired outcome.

o Identify goals and objectives that would facilitate that outcome.

o Translate those goals and objectives into policies and procedures for the department or unit.

o Describe relevant professional standards.

· Explain how your proposed resolution to the problem would uphold the organization’s mission and values and improve the culture and climate.

Select two (2) patients/clients with common health problems/diseases or undergoing common
procedures in your specialty(SURGICAL NURSING). Prepare a specialty nursing assessment and care case study for each of
these patients, using the tables provided (appendix C). This is not an essay, you must be succinct when
completing the tables and support the information presented with evidence-based literature.
The focus of this assignment is on the specific assessment and care undertaken by a specialty
nurse in your setting. This will include seemingly basic elements of nursing care, but the purpose of
this assignment is for you to focus on the specific elements pertinent to your specialty. Ask yourself:
what is the focus of my nursing assessment and care as a specialist nurse for patients with these
specific specialty problems/procedures?
You may choose to focus your assessment of the patient at any point of their journey whilst in your care.
Approximately 2500 words (1000 words each case study +

What to include in your assignment:
• Briefly introduce your overall assignment and what you will cover (one paragraph)
• Introduce the first case study patient (and family where appropriate) by stating their name/s

your patient.
o Making a nursing diagnosis (or specific statement) about each specific issue requiring
care.
o Describing three (3) key specialty nursing actions to implement, for each of these
issues.
o Evaluating and/or analysing the rationale (supported with evidence-based literature) for
each action.
• Discuss the significance of the specialty nurse role in relation to assessment and care for this
patient in your specialty (one paragraph)
• Evidence-based literature sources must be cited for each element of these tables
• Then repeat the above for an additional patient
• Make an overall conclusion to your assignment and what you have covered (one paragraph).
