Purpose and aims:
As a small group**, students will research, analyse and critically appraise an existing activism campaign aimed at addressing a social or environmental issue.
Each team is required to choose ONE campaign from the following list:
- Say NO to plastic bags – http://www.cleanup.org.au/au/Whatelsewesupport/SayNOtoPlasticBag.html
Once the campaign of interest has been chosen, students will critically analyse and appraise campaign objectives, planning, design and outcomes and write up their findings in s business report.
** This assessment requires students to actively engage and work collaboratively with a diverse range of students to be able to understand the perspectives of others; therefore, small groups of 5 (groups will be formed in week 3 or 4) will be formed by self-selection (with the support of the lecturer) however, you are highly recommended to have a range of disciplines, ages, cultural and linguistic skills as the greater the diversity of your group, the broader the range of ideas that will be available to you. This assessment task provides students an opportunity for inter-cultural learning, which requires a culturally heterogeneous mix of students.
Description of the assessment:
Students are required to reference at least 4 types of resources in the group written report:
- Minimum of 6 journal articles (students are required to use scholarly and peer-reviewed articles) and textbooks.
- Newspaper/Magazine articles
- Company/NGO Websites
- Company Sustainability reports
A total of 15-20 references are expected for the report
Assignment development and submission method: OU Wiki
Students are required to actively engage and participate with their group members to deliver Assessment Task 3a using an OU Wiki.
What is OU Wiki?
A wiki is a webâ€based platform helping you work together to create and edit a set of linked pages. It’s a quick, easy way of creating a miniâ€website. Wiki also keeps a record of who has made changes and created content and a history allowing you to ‘roll back’ to an earlier version. These features make it a useful tool for teamwork and creating a shared resource.
How to use it?
OU Wiki is a module designed in LMS and students simply can use it as a platform to write their assignments. It is quite similar to common methods of typing e.g. MS Word but is web-based. The full instruction of how to use it, will be described within the workshops. We have prepared a tutorial video for you to learn how to use it. Please visit your LMS.
How will it be assessed?
OU Wiki requires students to actively engage and work collaboratively with their group members. It also helps the lecturer to track students’ engagement and progress during their participations. Therefore, students would be evaluated using the common method of evaluation. Please see Grading Criteria Assessment Task 3a: Group Campaign Appraisal Report.

A Talent Management Plan (Individual Assessment; 50%)
Recently, the top management team in HSBC Australia has been worried about the impact that all the changes in the modern business world have brought, and wants to tackle many of the issues and challenges as a result of these changes by drafting a talent management plan for the next 10 years. This plan will help HSBC Australia manage its human resources and stay competitive in the banking industry.
Imagine that you work for a consulting company which is specialised in human resource management. HSBC Australia has hired your company to draft the talent management plan for them. You are assigned to work with HSBC on this task.
Please draft a Talent Management Plan for HSBC Australia, drawing on:
- the Oracle White Paper (link: The future of talent management: Underlying drivers of change) and,
- what you have learned in your lectures by the deadline of the assignment, or any other relevant materials.
In this plan, you need to describe what challenges the company might be facing, and what do you think the company should do in relation to talent management, and why they should take these measures.
Due Date: 7pm Friday, 15 September 2017 (Singapore time)
Length: 1500 words (+/-200 words) + reference list
Format: Double spacing, Times New Roman, size 12 font, double-sided
Reference Style: RMIT Harvard (http://www1.rmit.edu.au/library/referencing-guides)
The essay needs to be well structured and coherent such that it clearly communicates insights and critical thinking. This assessment piece will be assessed primarily on their ability to recognise, analyse and discuss the key issues, theories and practices relevant to contemporary management. When you submit your assignments, go to “Assessment tasks†in the Blackboard, where you can find two Turnitin submission sites at the bottom of the page. The first one, “Talent Management Plan—Draftâ€, is meant for you to try out the submission process and check the originality of your submitted assignments. You can submit your work as many times as you want. Your submitted work will NOT be graded. Once you are familiar with the submission process and happy with your work, you can then submit a final version through “Talent Management Plan—Finalâ€. Please note that you can only submit your final version to the Talent Management Plan–Final one time.
Important notes:
a. Late submissions will be penalised 10% of the full marks allocated to this assessment (i.e., 5 marks) per day including weekends.
b. As a rough guide, over 20% of matches in the originality report will be considered as plagiarism. However, it also depends on the nature of the matches. For example, if you have 10% matches in your submitted work, but these matches indicate you might have copied a whole paragraph from some source, it will still be considered as plagiarism.
