Practice Narrative Analysis on Health Promoting Theory-Based, Research/Evidence-Based Practice

PART ONE

The following assigned readings are meant to encourage you to critically reflect on evidence-based practice. As you read the CNA?s position statement and the critiques in the articles, make notes on your views and questions that you wish to explore further.

PART TWO

The following reflective questions are presented to further assist you in your exploration of research/evidence-based practice. They are a starting point for your exploration. Feel free to pursue other questions that may arise for you.
? What constitutes evidence?
? Who determines what evidence is used in nursing?
? How does evidence resonate with nursing research?
? What does the nursing literature have to say about evidence-based practice (EBP)?
? How does health promoting practice resonate with EBP?
? Is EBP necessary? Explain your yes or no answer.
? In your view, how has or will EBP influence theory-based practice and the quality of nursing care for clients?
? What are the benefits and/or drawbacks to implementing EBP?
? What meaning does EBP have for you in your chosen practice setting?
? How is EBP being carried out in your chosen practice setting?
? If it is not being implemented, how could it be carried out?
Review what the CNA?s position statement on EBP has to say about the responsibilities of the various players in the health care setting. What comments and/or questions come to mind for you??Do you plan to revise your learning map (in relation to your QIs in the domains of practice) after exploring EBP in this section of the course? If so what changes will you make?

PART THREE

After reflecting and making notes on the above questions, write a 600 to 700 word practice narrative analysis that explores the consistencies or inconsistencies between the concepts of health promoting practice, theory-based practice, and research evidence-based practice.?In this practice analysis:
? Choose one of the following topics to analyze:
Health promoting practice and EBP: In what ways does EBP support or create a barrier to the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) position statement that client values and choices as well as evidence are part of the decision-making in nursing practice (2010)? What implications does your analysis have for your practice?
EBP and theory-based nursing practice: In what ways does EBP enable or constrain your theory-based nursing practice? What implications does your analysis have for your practice?
EPB and Evidence-Informed Decision-Making: Review the issues raised in the articles of debate between Walker and Forbes. How EBP unfolded since the 2003 debate? Have the guidelines within the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) position statement (2010) been taken up in practice to avoid Walker?s concern for EBP as ?unreflexive and dogmatic technologies of knowledge? (Walker, 2003, p.152)? Describe practice examples illustrating the application of or lack of application of discernment within decision making and re-evaluation related to EBP. What implications does your analysis have the decisions you make in your nursing practice?
? Choose one philosophical perspective from the curriculum (e.g., critical social theory, feminism, or phenomenology) as a lens to view your chosen topic. Use the chosen philosophical perspective to guide your analysis and respond to the questions listed under topic a, b, or c.

Conscientiousness and optimism are covered in the text. Moreover, the trait of friendliness can be inferred from the discussion of good interpersonal skills in Chapter 1.

In a three-page paper, address the following four questions. Follow APA format, and use each question for a section heading.

What was your score on The Conscientiousness Quiz in the text? Does you score suggest that you will live at least 100 years?
Why would a person with a high degree of optimism make a better manager, sales representative, or coworker?
Why would a conscientious person live longer, as well as performing better on the job?
Imagine that you are the HR director at a large company. Why would it help the company to hire many employees who are optimistic, friendly, and conscientious?
