Protective role of religious involvement against depression and suicidal ideation among youth with interpersonal problems

Question

Analysis Paper Instructions: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace

as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Youth suicide is a tragedy for all who know the child or adolescent. Adolescents, due to factors including cognitive development and lack of problem-solving skills, take their own lives when hope for better things to come has vanished. While not absolutely preventable, counselors and other mandated reporters are required to adhere to a set of standards for best practices in the assessment and determination of suicide risk. Christian counselors come alongside those clients and instill hope, much as the Holy Spirit comes alongside believers in times of doubt and trouble. As a counseling professional, you must be able to accurately assess the level of risk, consult with a supervisor or colleague to determine next steps, form a plan of action, and then document everything, including the consultation. Counselors are also to seek continuing education and maintain positive relationships with colleagues for support. In the article listed, the protective factor of faith in the lives of children and adolescents is discussed. Influences that contribute to child and adolescent suicide risk are personal characteristics, family ecology, and the media/internet.

Discuss the key warning signs and behaviors, as well as intervention strategies, noted in your text. How might families intervene and respond positively to a suicide crisis? Include analysis and critique from the following journal article, with regard to the protective factor of faith:

Cole-Lewis, Y. C., Gipson, P. Y, Opperman, K. J., Arango, A. & King, C. A. (2016). Protective role of religious involvement against depression and suicidal ideation among youth with interpersonal problems. Journal of Religious Health, 55. 1172-1188. DOI: 10.1007/s10943-016-0194-y

The paper must include at least 4 peer-reviewed scholarly resources (no older than 5 years) .

Question

Analysis Paper Instructions: “There will always be poor

people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11

Jesus said that there will always be poor among us, but, as Christians, we are called to seek to relieve the suffering of those around us who are struggling to take care of even those basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. Nearly 1 in 4 children and adolescents in America grow up in poverty, according to Evans and Kim (2013). Poverty is an overarching risk factor across all systems in the Ecological Model. Poverty influences socioeconomic, psychosocial, cognitive, behavioral, and physical development of children and adolescents. The Ecological Model provides a way of analyzing how varied dimensions of the environment support or decrease the likelihood of risk and risk category behaviors.

Read the following article:

Evans, G. W. & Kim, Pilyoung. (2013). Childhood poverty, chronic stress, self-regulation, and coping. Child Development Perspectives, The Society for Research in Child Development, 7, (1), pps. 43-48.  DOI: 10.111/cdep.12013

Provide a discussion and analysis of the impact of chronic stress and coping on development throughout childhood and adolescence. You will use the framework of the Ecological Model as the basis and include at least 4 peer-reviewed scholarly resources (no older than 5 years).

The Ecological Model

Question

Personal Application of the Ecological Model
style=”color:rgb(17,17,17);”>The Ecological Model offers a way to conceptualize child and adolescent development, based on a series of interrelated systems with bi-directional influence. These bi-directional influences either decrease or increase the likelihood of risk and risk category behaviors. Discuss your own childhood and adolescence, based on your understanding of the Ecological Model and the influence of family interaction patterns, noted in Chapter 3 ( McWhirter, J. J., McWhirter, B. T., McWhirter, E. H., & McWhirter, R. J. (2017). At-risk youth: A comprehensive response for counselors, teachers, psychologists, and human service professionals (6th ed.). Stamford, CT: Cengage. ISBN: 9781305670389). . How has the pattern of early interactions within the family influenced developmental outcomes along the risk continuum, either reducing risk or increasing the likelihood of at-risk behaviors?

Family Systems Therapy and Interventions

Question

Family Systems Therapy and Interventions
A family systems framework provides a way to assess,

intervene and set treatment goals. The individual is not the problem – the problem is the problem. Family members respond to stressful events based on the ecology of the family, as well as individual ecology. Family counseling may include parent support groups, parent education, and parent training. Choose 1 family-based intervention and discuss the intervention and how change is effected within the family.

The family systems framework is a realistic and viable way to view the problems of troubled children and adolescents. All children and adolescents live in a montage of overlapping systems: families, schools, neighborhoods, communities, and the nation. Family counselors address the family as a system, in order to change dysfunctional patterns of behavior and communication. Why is systemic change necessary for lasting family and individual functioning?
