Part 1 (due Saturday by 11:59pm)

Compare the two assigned films: Rebecca and Rosemary’s Baby.Your comparison must center on at least one gothic element or trope (see the Glossary of Literary Gothic Terms for ideas), and you should also reference Misha Kavka’s essay, “The Gothic on Screen,” in formulating your response. 

Suggested pairings:

• Examine the trope of the damsel in distress as represented in the principle female characters from Rebecca and Rosemary’s Baby.
• Compare the role of setting in Rebecca and Rosemary’s Baby.
• Select your own point of comparison.

Your post should be 300-500 words in length.

Structure:

This post will be shorter than the others, so a 5+ paragraph essay structure won’t work. 2-3 paragraphs should suffice, but you should still have an identifiable  thesis statement. (Links to an external site.)

Part 2 (due Sunday by 11:59pm)

Offer thoughtful feedback on at least 2 of your classmates’ posts. If a classmate has already received 2 responses, please find another classmate’s post that hasn’t. This time, instead of stating whether or not you agree or disagree with your peer’s perspective, I want you to evaluate how well he/she makes his argument, focusing on the thesis statement. Does the post contain an arguable thesis statement? Is it clear and easy to understand? Why or why not? What could your classmate have done to strengthen his/her thesis? 

Each response post should be 100-150 words in length. Please post your responses no later than Sunday.  Failure to respond to classmates’ posts will result in a lowered grade for the assignment.

After that, when you’re done composing your initial post, you’ll click “post reply” (I advise that you first compose your post in a Word document, save it to your computer, and then copy and paste the entry–that way, you don’t risk losing your work). Once others have submitted their initial posts, you’ll be able to view those and reply to the summary of your choice. Note that you will not be able to see any other posts until you have posted Part 1.
