SCI207-WEEK-3-our-world-is-heavily-dependent-on-oil

DISCUSSION

As you know, our world is heavily dependent on oil. In Chapter 6 of Contemporary Environmental Issues, you have read that there is concern about the possibility of reaching a peak in oil production, while Chapter 8 of Contemporary Environmental Issues introduces a variety of possible alternative energy sources. Based on the concern that we may be running out of oil, describe at least two renewable alternatives to oil that are currently available and discuss the barriers that keep these alternatives from replacing oil as our primary means of energy. Do not discuss other fossil fuels or nuclear energy, which are all nonrenewable sources. Additionally, discuss the role that government plays in ensuring a transition to these renewable alternatives in a post peak-oil world.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Utilize at least two scholarly or reputable resources and your textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources in APA format. Quoted text should constitute no more than ten percent of your post. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

ValleyTech-Memo

In this activity you will practice using persuasive style in professional documentation. There are two parts to this activity. First, you will craft an internal memo considering the scenario described below. Then, you will write a memo to me defending and describing why you crafted the internal memo the way you did, considering style and genre strategies from Chapters 5 & 16.

Step 1: The Scenario

You are a manager at ValleyTech, a mid-size biotechnology corporation in the Great Lakes Bay Region, required to write a memo to all employees instructing them to participate in health and safety training.

The memo must contain the following information:

  • All employees are required to the health and safety training class.
  • The classes are mandatory and will be held every Monday and Wednesday at 8:00 am in room 305.
  • Employees must complete one of these courses by October 11th, 2016 in order to be in compliance with company policy.
  • Employees failing to meet this requirement in a timely manner may be suspended until the requirement is completed

As a manager, though, you are also aware of the following information:

  • Two weeks ago, an employee had an accident in one of the labs at ValleyTech. He was exposed to blood born pathogens and has not returned to work since. Apparently he is ill, and the company is worried about possible legal ramifications for the incident since the staff was not properly trained in dealing with these sorts of situations.
  • The majority of ValleyTech competitors require health and safety training as a part of their orientation for new employees.
  • Coffee and donuts could easily be provided during the training.
  • ValleyTech has hired a leading health and safety expert to come in twice a week for the next two weeks. Her name is Mindy Allen, and she is with Mid-Michigan Health and Safety Consultants, LLC.
  • There is an online training program available, but the company is afraid if they offer this as an option that people will not attend the sessions with the expensive consultant they have hired.
  • Employees actually have until the end of the calendar year to complete the training, but Mindy Allen will only be here until October 11.
  • The Bureau of Labor reports that in 2006 for professional and business industries, there were two reported cases of occupational injury for every 100 employees. ValleyTech would fall in this category. ValleyTech currently has 1500 employees.

As you craft the memo, decide whether or not it would help persuade your audience to attend if they knew this information and if it is ethical to share such information. Incorporate this information as appropriate, considering the conventions of memos as described in Chapter 5 and persuasive style and other strategies from Chapter 16. Please Note: You do not have to include all of the additional information. You may pick and choose based on the rhetorical style you choose.

Step 2: The Defense

After you completed the internal memo, write a memo to me that explains and defends the choices you made and the ways in which you considered strategies from Chapters 5 & 16. This memo should be approximately 200-250 words.

The Deliverables

1. Completed internal memo

2. Defense memo

feedback-opinion-Colonialism-is-the-act-in-which-one-nation-gains-control-over-another-nation-and-maintains-its-presence-there

for this assignment please respond to the following with your opinion . Please respond with 200 words

Colonialism is the act in which one nation gains control over another nation and maintains its presence there. There are two types of colonialism. One is settler colonialism where an immigrant nation takes over foreign land and the indigenous people are wiped out. The other type of colonialism is called elite colonialism where the indigenous rulers are replaced with European ones however the indigenous population remains intact. As the British began to cross over to America, they used the settler colonialism type on the people that had currently lived there. When they began to settle along the east coast in places such as Jamestown, Maryland, and Massachusetts, the native people were pushed back towards the west coast. The British were more technologically advanced in warfare and this was no problem for them. As the natives were pushed back, they began to encroach on other tribes land and caused even more warfare, eventually leading to the rapid decline of the native population. Another con to the settling of the British in America was that they brought over new diseases foreign to the land and peoples that were already there. These diseases took a toll on the indigenous people as well as the crops that were grown during this time. As soon as precious metals were discovered here, the British as well as other ountries wanted to claim land in America to extract the gold, silver, etc. This caused even more immigrants to the area and contributed to the decline of the native people as well. Basically, the greed and want of more power caused almost a whole population of people to become extinct. The country would be a completely different place if the British never wanted to expand their territory and rule beyond their borders into America.

The British Empire also expanded their power in Africa as well once France and Germany began to “reap the benefits” in this area. They brought over diseases that made the people here sick and die. They exported the crops that were grown here tenfold in exchange for other goods from other countries and better their home in Britain. They seized as much land here as they could for fear of being left behind since France and Germany was already on the move in this area. The discovery and gold and diamonds in Africa did not help the native people keep their country for themselves. Many immigrants came over to gain access to these precious metals as they did in America. Another con to the British coming over into Africa was the use of slaves, which they saw as a good that could be traded. They used the indigenous population to grow their crops and basically do the manual labor they did not want to do. They transported these slaves on boats, packed them tight like fish. This in turn caused disease outbreak and many did not make the trip. One could say this was probably better for them than working a life of slavery where you were not appreciated for the work you did. The British however did not care if they made it, they just went back for more. It is digusting to think that the human race can look at another race and see a commodity in them that can be traded.

In short I think colonialism, whether it was settler or elite, was a negative thing to the world back then. It set up negative feelings towards those countries that sought to expand their territories by taking other peoples’ land in the way that they did. It almost wiped out certain populations that are crucial to our world today. Everyone brings something to the table and pushing them away or giving them a life in which they basically could not think for themselves caused riffs between the nations that could have been avoided.
