1.Give one reason (Gladwell gives several) as to why the 3-strikes Law would not be a deterrent to criminals?
2.Why doesn’t locking criminals up for more years solve the problem?
3.The Derksens had a different response to their daughter’s death than Mike Reynolds did. What was their response?
4. Gladwell makes the point that the Derksens believe in the inverted U-curve. What does he mean?
5. Gladwell states: “Wilma Derksen could have been Mike Reynolds. She could have started her own version of 3-Strikes. She chose not to. ‘It would have been easier in the beginning, ‘ She continued. ‘But then it would have gotten harder. I think I would have lost Cliff, I think I would have lost my children. In some ways I would be doing to others what he did to Candace’” (261). What does Wilma mean in her last statement? What does she mean that she would have been doing the same thing to others that the criminal did the Candace?
