artwork, attend to:

  • characters: are there characters depicted in the piece
    of literature? what do you learn about them? from what perspective is the
    writing presented?
  • format: is this a novel? a short story? a poem?
  • subject matter: what is being portrayed? why is it
    being portrayed?
  • tone: how is the subject matter being portrayed? what
    impression does the piece make?
  • symbolism: are there elements of the piece that
    communicate a larger meaning?
  • What is the theme identified as corresponding to your
    artwork selections in the Comparison Suggestion List?
  • Consider the visual artwork you selected:
    • What elements of the visual presentation of the piece
      of art relate to the theme?
    • Is there some event depicted in the artwork that
      relates to the theme?
    • Is there something about the purpose or cultural role
      played by the artwork that relates to the theme?
  • Consider the literary artwork you selected:
    • If you know anything about the author’s intentions,
      consider how those relate to the specified theme.
    • Is there anything about the tone of the text that
      relates to the theme?
    • Is there some part of the plot or story of the text
      that relates to the theme?
    • Is there something about the reception or historical
      relevance of the text that relates to the theme?
