Software Development Methodology Recommendation Memo
You will likely be involved in some aspect of software development or acquisition in your internships and your
career after graduation. In addition, you likely will be asked to look for alternative problem-solving approaches,
summarize those to your supervisor, and make a recommendation. This assignment will engage you in thinking
about the way that software development projects are organized and managed and ask you to reflect on an
appropriate approach for our class project.
Solutions for small programs, such as those you have done in your programming courses, can be conceptualized
in your mind and the code can be written by a single person without a lot of pre-planning. However due to their
size or complexity, larger software systems that you will encounter in an internship or in your career cannot be
easily solved by a single person. Large systems require teams of people who may be separated by distance.
When a team is involved, some management processes are needed to organize work assignments and to
facilitate communication between team members and clients. We call that management process a software
development methodology. This seems like a straightforward process, but many computer-systems have failed
due to flaws in the process.
In this class, we will learn the Software Development Life Cycle focusing on Agile Technology. This assignment
introduces contrasting software development methodologies so that you are aware that there are choices to be
made and for you to think about which process you believe would likely help you to successfully complete the
class project on time while meeting the needs of our client. What I want You To Learn
