Critical Discussion 1: What Is Philosophy and Logical Consistency?
”
Note on course assignments:All essay assignments will be typed (double-spaced & 12 pt. font—preferably Times New Roman) and uploaded into the designated assignment tab on Canvas. I will distribute specific outlines, details, and rubrics for each major writing assignment within the ASSIGNMETNS tab on Canvas. You will post all critical responses on the Canvas discussion board by the due date (the syllabus and Canvas both have due dates for each assignment). You must also respond to two of your peers’ reflections. Your response to your peer’s reflections must be at least one full paragraph and contain critical, constructive, and substantive commentary. Simple statements like “I agree” or “you did well” will not suffice. If you do not respond to your peer’s work, I will take points off of your response’s overall grade for the assignment. Also, if you do not post critical commentary or substantive comments, I will take points off your overall grade for the assignment. Late responses will have anywhere from 2-5 points taken off, depending on the quality of the work. Ten points will be taken off the final grade for each week an essay assignment is not turned in. You must sufficiently complete all the work to receive a passing grade of a “C.” Grades of “B” or “A” will be determined by the excellence of all your work and contributions to the work of your peers. Simply completing all the assignments does not guarantee an “A” or “B” in the course. I generally give students a “W” at the end of the semester if they have a failing grade. If you would rather receive an “F” instead of a “W,” please let me know in writing.Academic Freedom/Online EtiquetteCritical inquiry and expression is the product of diverse individual and collective synthesis and/or resonance. These complex dimensions of critical discourse necessitate that academic freedom is balanced with a collegial and safe educational environment. While you don’t have to believe other positions on philosophical issues, you should remain collegial and respectful when engaged in dialogue. Some of the content and class discussions may be challenging for those who are ideologically-dogmatic, especially when it comes to scientific, political, and religious ideas. If any of this content is problematic, please notify me and we can arrange for alternative assignments and/or readings. (If this is the case, keep in mind that you will be in charge of securing the material and engaging with the material on your own time). We are all adults and none of the course should be used as a means of intentionally harassing others. Let us be open-minded and respectful of others. Everyone in class owns his/her conversations.
