Write a critical response, about 3 – 4 pages in length (double-spaced), discussing what you find useful or interesting about what he has to say. If you disagree with some of his points, you can discuss that as well. You may want to employ the techniques he suggests to this paper.

Use what he says as a basis to assess your own ability to construct a good argument. What are your strengths and weaknesses in this area? What changes are you willing to make after reading Graff? Also, how can you use his ideas to help you analyze a scholarly article? What should you be looking for when you assess an author’s argument for its strengths and weaknesses?

The goal of this assignment is to help you better understand the nature of scholarly argument, which is how knowledge is created in academic circles. I am hoping that you will then be able to apply that understanding to the next two assignments, in which you will systematically analyze the structure of selected articles.
