I always knew I was a great communicator from a young age. My parents taught me that the best way to get what I wanted was through communicating. My communication skills have helped me in interacting with others as well as getting me things I never expected. One and a half years ago, we were going on a road trip with one of my friends when our car hit a Toyota Allion that was in front of us. It happened so fast, and my friend, who was driving got into defense mode. He claimed that it was not his fault and quickly got off the car to confront the other driver. The next thing I knew both of them were having a loud argument on who caused the accident. I believe that communication is the best way to solve any problem, so I also got out of the car to try to get into an amicable solution.
In the beginning, no one wanted to listen to me, and they continued arguing without recognizing my presence. I went back to the car and hooted three times to get their attention. As I suspected, this got them to keep quiet and looked at me surprised. I got out of the car and requested each of them to narrate the incidence as they remembered it. They each told their story, and after they were finished, we all agreed that my friend was at fault. We gave him the insurance contacts to get the damages fixed and ended the conversation with a handshake. The incidence had attracted an audience who aired their opinions about my friend’s poor driving. This riled him up again, and he started an argument. My friend has always believed in confronting matters without a second thought. This character has gotten him in serious trouble a few times.
As expected, the crowd started ganging up against him, and I had to stand between my friend and the group to stop them from doing something terrible. I calmed the crowd down and told the crowd that the best way to solve the dispute was through listening to one another and talking things through. I also explained to them that the issue had been settled and my friend had taken responsibility for the incidence. They apologized for being quick to judge and went their different ways. My friend and I went back to the car and continued our journey. To make sure that such an incidence never happened again, I talked to my friend about his temper and advised him to listen to other people before passing judgment. Notably, if I had joined in the argument, we could not have gotten a solution and would possibly be in the same place. However, since my parents taught me to communicate, listen and talk things through, I was able to solve an issue that would have quickly gone bad. Communication skills are difficult to achieve and require a lot of patience. This is because one can easily get carried away in giving an answer that they miss out on the vital information. When I told my friend and the other driver to listen to each story, they were able to conclude the facts about the accident. I do not believe that I have mastered the art of communication, hence always willing to learn new information every day.
