The first of the four characteristics of adult learning that I will be focusing on is “control over learning.”  Control over learning is to tend to adults due to them being self-directed in their lives.  SNHU provides this element by allowing its students to choose their own path, as well as allowing them to control the time in which they complete projects.  SNHU’s online process gives the adult learner the ability to take care of their daily life responsibilities and then dedicate time to their course work.

Second of the four characteristics I have chosen is “pragmatic in learning.”  Pragmatic in learning provides the adult learner the information that they can immediately apply to their current situation and needs.  In obtaining a degree in business at SNHU, they provide you with real business situation and problem solving, that all companies either in the past or in the future have or will run into.  When reading real business situations it allows the adult learner to quickly utilize the information and develop it to fill their possible needs (Constantinescu & Moore, 2019).

Third of the four characteristics I have chosen is “learning may be a secondary role.”  Learning may be a secondary role is based on the adult learner being a student is their secondary role of life (Constantinescu & Moore, 2019).  Their main role may be parenting, work or many other aspects of day-to-day life.  SNHU has developed a system that allows the adult learner to truly put their lives first and the reading, learning second, but also continue to be successful in both.  SNHU’s 24 hours accessibility for online learners, provides the learner to pick what times work best for them to complete their weekly projects, readings and reports.

The fourth and final characteristic that I chose is “draw on past experiences in learning.” Drawing on past experiences in learning is developed to provide the adult learner to evaluate the validity of new ideas and concepts by relating them to past experiences. At SNHU they have based a majority of the curriculum on real life business situations, which allows the adult learner to use their knowledge from the experiences they have had in the corporate world.
