The particular focus of this class will be on basic descriptive statistics, probability and sampling distributions, hypothesis testing and simple regression analysis. Tools taught in Business Statistics can be used to study advertising, finance, marketing and other business topics. Pre-requisites: MAT 211 or 271 with C or better. This implies that you understand differential calculus. Do not be afraid to review your math texts while taking this class. It may come in handy. If you have ditched your old books a good website is: http://mathworld.wolfram.com. W. P. Carey School of Business Learning Goals The Undergraduate Program of the W.P. Carey School of Business has established the following learning goals for its graduates: 1. Critical Thinking 2. Communication 3. Discipline Specific Knowledge 4. Ethical Awareness and Reasoning 5. Global Awareness Items in bold have significant coverage in this course. 2 Teaching Philosophy, Course Objectives, and Course Learning Outcomes I believe that the best way to teach statistics is for me to: 1. explain a concept 2. demonstrate how to use or apply that concept to solve a problem; this means giving you some examples 3. help you solve a problem on your own, we will do this in class where you can asks questions for guidance on the spot 4. enable you to deepen your understanding by providing additional examples, this means providing homework problems that allow you to solidify your understanding Objectives and outcomes include: learning how to do basic statistical analysis which will include a few examples using excel. This includes, but is not limited to, providing descriptive statistics, constructing confidence intervals, conducting hypothesis tests for one or more means and performing basic regression analysis such as determining R2 , the coefficients and their statistical significance. You will be able to show your understanding by answering homework and exam questions. Required Textbook and Other Materials Essentials of Statistics for Business and Economics 7th edition by Anderson, Sweeney, Williams, Camm and Cochran. You can get the hardbound book (ISBN 9781133629658) or the version in the bookstore; there is no access card required or code required for this class. Blackboard: Access to Blackboard (Bb) is required. I will use Bb to send emails to the entire class, post lecture notes and grades. You will submit your homework via Bb. You can access Bb through your MyASU portal. You also need to have activated your ASU email account. If your email account is not active, you do not receive class email sent through Bb. For technical assistance with Blackboard, contact 480-965-2400 or wpcarey.support@asu.edu. Please be aware that Section 125 of the Academic Policies and Procedures Manual prohibits the use of the ASU Electronic Blackboard for anything other than academic use. You are responsible for all announcements made on Bb so please check your email and Bb each week. Also, the discussion board on Bb will be the avenue for answering questions about the material. Please post your questions about the material there and email me when a question is private. Example, “How do I calculate the standard deviation?” goes on the discussion board while “I think my homework 2 score is wrong because …” should be emailed to me. A calculator is highly recommended. Software: I will assume that no one has a computer but that everyone has access to one on the first floor of CPCOM and other locations on campus. I will demonstrate how to do some statistical procedures using excel and there will be some assignments requiring you to use excel. For bonus points you must be able to send text message responses during in class quizzes. This is optional but to be eligible you must register at https://www.polleverywhere.com. When 3 registering you must enter your ASU posting id so that you can be linked to my gradebook. If you do not register or if you register without your posting ID you will not receive credit. Instructions for registering are on Bb. It is considered a violation of academic integrity to utilize course materials which are illegally sourced. Please ensure that you are ordering and paying for your own materials. Grading and Course Requirements Requirements: Exams 640 points There will be four exams. Each exam is cumulative. Each exam is worth 213.34 points. I will drop your lowest exam from your point total, i.e. only your 3 highest exam scores count toward your grade; one exception is if your low exam score is due to academic dishonesty in which case it will not be dropped. One of the four exams is the final. Note that because I only count your three highest exam scores that the final is optional. Homework 1-12, 360 points There will be twelve (12) homework assignments which are individual work. These are due every Friday at 11:30PM in Bb except for weeks in which I give an exam. They are worth 30 points each. Homework will be marked late by Bb after 11:30AM the Saturday after it is due; in other words there is a 12 hour grace period. Homework submitted at 11:31AM Saturday, or later, will be docked 5 points for every hour it is late. In Bb when you are finished with an assignment you must click to submit it. If you do not submit it by the due date then it is late. You are allowed one (1) attempt on each homework. There will be a practice homework available for all homework assignments except the make-up. I recommend doing the practice homework before attempting the graded homework in order to verify your understanding and to help improve your score. If Bb has an outage (planned or unplanned) on the Friday that the homework is due and the outage occurs before 11:30PM then the due date will move by one hour for every hour that Bb is down and the grace period will be shortened by one hour. If the outage lasts more than 12 hours this means that there will not be a grace period that week. Please do the homework in advance of the due date to avoid complications. Check https://uto.asu.edu/system-health for updates on Bb outages. In Class Quizzes/Bonus points There will be periodic in class quizzes or participation opportunities for extra points. You can take these quizzes by sending a text message to a “polleverywhere” number that will be provided with each quiz. You must also register for free at https://www.polleverywhere.com and sign up for your quiz results to be tracked in my gradebook which is linked with my email richard.g.cox@asu.edu. 4 When registering you must enter your ASU posting id so that you can be linked to my gradebook. If you do not register correctly then you will not receive credit. Make up policy The make-up policy for exams is below in the examinations section. For homework you are allowed one make-up. Possible reasons for needing a make-up are: illness, family emergency, prolonged internet outage, work responsibilities etc. Because these issues impact everyone differently they may mean that some students are unable to do the homework at all while for others it may mean they get a lower score than they would have gotten under better circumstances and as such anyone can do the make-up assignment and have it replace their lowest score. The make-up homework is due the last week of class, it is completely optional and cannot lower your point total. Unethical and disruptive behavior This will probably apply to no one, but, points may be subtracted from your total for disruptive behavior in class or unethical behavior. Examples: repeatedly disrupting the class. Unethical behavior would include asking for a grade you have not earned or attempting to bribe me for a grade or any form of academic dishonesty. Grade Scale: Grade minimum points earned Grade minimum points earned A+ 975 B- 800 A 900 C+ 780 A- 899 C 700 B+ 880 D 625 B 820 E 0 Curve: I reserve the right to curve the final grades upward at my sole discretion. I will make such a decision after reviewing the totals after the final exam. I do not change grades based on individual requests. Assignments: I encourage students to study together. All graded assignments are individual work. I will post occasional reading assignments that are not in the textbook. These will come from news, current events, and research articles which incorporate statistics or in some way relate to our learning about statistics and its importance. 5 Examinations: You must have your student ID card to take the exams. If you do not have your ASU ID card there is a 30 point penalty. If you have lost your ID card you must get a new one which will take about 5 minutes and $25 in the Memorial Union https://cfo.asu.edu/cardservices-suncard . Proctors may assign seats for exams. You must show your ASU ID to be seated. Passports, driver licenses, phones etc. are not substitutes for your ASU ID and are not accepted. Bring a pencil to all exams. You must fill in your ASU ID number on the scantron provided (if the exam is multiple choice a scantron will be provided). You must take the exam with your section. If you take the exam with a section other than the one for which you are enrolled you may receive a 0. For exceptions see below and the course FAQs. Exams including the final are offered in the same room where I give the lectures. Materials allowed during the exam: pencil and a calculator. Nothing else is allowed. Cell phones may not be used in place of standard calculators. Programmable calculators are allowed. However, if the technology of a specific calculator becomes a problem I reserve the right to prohibit certain calculators; currently there are no banned calculators. I will provide a study guide for each of the exams and old exams are available online. Academic dishonesty: I will consider any form of communication during an exam to be cheating and you will receive a 0. I will consider writing letters in the margin of your exam to be communicating and you will receive a 0 if you write letters in the margin of your test. Using any materials not allowed during the exam will result in a 0 on the exam. Arriving late: if you arrive late and someone has already left the exam you will receive an alternate exam. If I run out of alternate exams or someone with an alternate exam has already left then you will not be allowed to take the exam. Questions during the exam: I will not answer any questions during the exam. If something is unclear make a note on your exam about it. Choose the best answer. Find your exam when you visit my office and ask for clarification. If there is an error on the exam I will adjust the scores to account for the error. Final exam schedule for Spring 2016 (https://students.asu.edu/final-exam-schedule) Lecture time Final exam date Final exam time 9:00 – 10:15 AM Thursday, May 5 7:30 – 9:20 AM 1:30 – 2:45 PM Thursday, May 5 12:10 – 2:00 PM 3:00 – 4:15 PM Tuesday, May 3 2:30 – 4:20 PM 6 Exceptions: You are only allowed to take exams with your section in the designated time and place unless ASU and its officials have allowed an exception. These are granted for (1) University sanctioned activities. You must present the appropriate documentation. (2) Religious holidays precluding work. (3) Tests taken in the Disability Resource Center. The DRC will contact me. (4) Medical emergencies requiring hospitalization. (5) Death of an immediate family member: sibling, parent, child or spouse. For cases (1), (2), and (3) you must make arrangements with me prior to the exam; for cases (1) and (2) this must be done in the first two weeks of class if possible. For cases (4) and (5) the economics department allows you to take a make-up within two weeks of the original exam. You must present appropriate documentation (hospital release form or death record) as soon as possible to take a make-up exam. The above policies are granted by ASU and the economics department. In addition, I have the following policy. If you have a 0 on one of the first three exams resulting from a no-show your 0 will be replaced by your score on the final for one exam, i.e. the final will serve as a make-up for the missed exam. In this way you will be granted a “make-up” if your absence from an exam is the result of an illness that does not result in hospitalization or the death of a family member or friend not specified in the economics department’s policy or any other emergency that might arise. Example: Exam 1 Exam 2 Exam 3 Final Exam Original Score 0 (no-show) 140 points 160 points 180 points After “Make-up” 180 points (0 is replaced by score on final exam) 140 points 160 points 180 points Total from top 3 exams=180+160+180=520 180 points Low score dropped 160 points 180 points Classroom Policies: I understand that you may occasionally ask a classmate a question which will result in a brief exchange (hopefully about the material). However prolonged conversations, talking on cell phones, laughing out loud when you get a funny text or Instagram etc. can be disruptive to other students. Disrupting the class may result in a lower grade and in extreme cases being removed from the class. https://clas.asu.edu/advising-and-academic-services/procedures-withdrawing-students-disruptivebehavior Academic Integrity and Ethical Behavior 7 The W. P. Carey School takes academic integrity very seriously. Therefore, unless otherwise specified, it is imperative that you do your own work. Any suspected violations of academic integrity will be taken seriously and result in the following sanctions: • A minimum of zero on the assignment OR • A reduced grade in the course OR • A failure in the course OR • An XE which denotes failure due to academic dishonesty on the transcript OR • Removal from the W. P. Carey School of Business Additional information on ASU’s academic integrity policy may be found at http://provost.asu.edu/academicintegrity It is unethical to attempt to receive a grade you have not earned. Requests for me to assign a grade that is unearned will be considered unethical behavior. If such requests are construed as bribes a notice will be filled with the W. P. Carey School. A final examination may be defined as a final presentation, a final paper, a 9 final project, etc. An examination does not necessarily have to be given in the form of a final “test.” (see ACD Manual 304-01). In this class the final exam is a test similar to the previous tests and will meet as per ASU policy. However, as noted in the grading requirements above, taking the final exam is not required for any particular grade, rather your grade is determined by how many points you have earned. The undergraduate final exam week schedule can be found here https:/students.asu.edu/finalexam-schedule. Absence Policies Absence on the day of an exam will result in a 0 on the exam. You are responsible for all announcements made in class. Religious Accommodations Accommodations will be made for students with religious holidays. Below is the calendar of official religious holidays. Each holiday noted with two asterisks denotes an observance for which work is not allowed. For these holidays, students will not be penalized in any way for missing class or assignment. This means that this will not count as an absence in class and they will be granted a makeup assignment or exam, etc. https://eoss.asu.edu/cora/holidays You must notify me and the TA at the first week of the semester if you need accommodation for any religious holidays so that we can make any necessary arrangements. There are no “no work” holidays this semester. Purim and Passover are not listed by ASU as no work holidays. Purim begins sundown March 23-24 Pesach-Passover begins sundown April 22-24 University-Sanctioned Activities Accommodations will be made for students who miss class related to university-sanctioned activities according to ACD 304-02. If you are participating in a university-sanctioned activity, please let me instructor know as early in the course as possible so that accommodations can be made. Tutoring Support The economics department has tutors available for ECN221 in BA 211. 10 Please note that the W. P. Carey School of Business provides free tutoring in BA 201 for a number of undergraduate business classes including ECN221. Assistance with writing is also provided.
