DWECK/DUCKWORTH

In preparation for our upcoming class discussion/lectures on Innovative Practices, which includes Character Strengths, Growth Mindset and Mindfulness, you will be watching some TED talks and taking some assessments to learn about yourself. How we think internally affects our ability to learn, our behavior and our communication. For example: How we “show up” at work and in our team collaborations matters. Being mindful (actively listening, being patient, allowing others to voice opinions and encouraging ourselves (and others) to participate) contributes to our team interactions and engagement.

1. Read the 2018 Dweck additional reading: 2018 Dweck Growth Mindsets(1).pdfPreview the document and then watch (taking notes may be beneficial) the TED Talk video: Carol Dweck “The power of believing that you can improve” (10 minutes)

(Links to an external site.)https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve/discussion (Links to an external site.)

and the TED Talk video: Angela Duckworth “Grit: The power of passion and perseverance” (6 minutes)

2. Critically think and reflect on the videos and article. The questions below are to help you start thinking about the clip and how it relates to our course- do NOT simple write out the answers to the questions.

3. Write your thoughts concisely in a discussion reflection with a minimum of 300-400 words covering BOTH videos. These posts are to show me that you are capable of critically thinking about the content and that you can coherently write your reflections. Your reflection should engage your classmates – this is an online discussion. Your original post is 60pts and is due Friday evening.

4. Post comment responses to at least 2 of your other classmate’s posts (ask each other questions in your posts, show me you are engaging in real online written communication and critically thinking about the assignment… do NOT simply agree with what they wrote). Each the these response posts must be at least 4 sentences long. Because of this part of the assignment, you may, as a group, want to agree to post your original posts EARLY to give you each time to post replies before the deadline. Each response is worth 20pts for a total of 40pts and is due by Sunday evening.

5. Consider including academic support (a quote from the posted materials in Canvas), real life stories or examples, real life observations (perhaps you over-heard a conversation that demonstrates fixed/growth mindset), your favorite quote (an item or passage that resonated with you or inspired you), and of course some in-depth commentary. Social-media surface-type commentary is far short of expectation.

Let’s embrace collaboration, perseverance and learning from our mistakes. Let’s embrace listening and deferring judgment and a willingness to try something different than we first imagined.

This is a graded assignment. Always do your best! I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say.
