English Comp II
Objective #1: View peers’ work by pointing out strengths, areas in need of improvement, or both.
You have already done peer review for the Writing to Remember Essay. Now you will review the Position Essay. You will want to take a global view: assessing logic, organization, and the integration of resources. You will also look at small issues right down to the sentence level and word choice. As you help your peers, you will think of your own essay and how it too can be improved.
Learning Activity #2: Position Essay Peer Review
Read through the Peer Response Guide in the “Research Based Position Essay Assignment” to familiarize yourself with how to give the best help to your fellow students as possible.
Online students
Attach your essay as an initial post to the forum titled Position Essay Peer Review, and retrieve three papers from your peers to review and provide feedback. Your facilitator may assign papers to each student to guarantee equal distribution.
After downloading three documents, open and click into the “review” toolbar, then click “track changes” to suggest corrections right in the paper itself and click “new comment” to add remarks in the margin.
Upload your reviewed copies of your peers’ essays to the Position Essay Peer Review forum as response posts. Upload by Friday midnight so your peers can benefit from your review as they work on their final drafts due at the end of Week Five.
Onsite students
Be prepared to participate in Peer Review in class. Bring two hard copies of your completed first draft to class: one for peers and the other for the professor. Also bring a copy of the Peer Response Guide page to the workshop to guide your Peer Review process during the workshop.
Objective #2: Apply the tools learned during the peer review process to the student’s own draft.
After doing so much close scrutiny of your position essay in the last several weeks, you will now step back and assess its effectiveness as a whole, giving a final evaluation of what you have done well and what, even at this late stage, can be improved.
Learning Activity #3: Position Essay Self-Assessment
Write a total of two paragraphs of self-assessment for your Research Based Position Essay. Use the first paragraph to assess the current version of your first draft. Rigorously critique your work, but also give yourself credit for what is working well. Specifically, respond to the following areas:
1. Why do you believe you have a good thesis?
2. How do your key points support your thesis?
3. Why would you be confident that you have underscored each point with credible sources?
4. Why would you affirm that your essay is effectively organized?
5. How have you maintained a simple, academic tone/style throughout your paper?
6. What makes you certain that your in-text and reference list citations are APA compliant?
In a second paragraph, state how you will revise. Which of the above six areas need work? Have a clear plan of action since the second draft of this essay is the final draft.
Online students
When you complete the self-assessment, submit it to the drop box titled Self-Assessment Response.
Onsite students
Participate in the class as directed by the facilitator so that you can submit the self-assessment to your facilitator in the drop box titled Self-Assessment Response no later than seven days after this last workshop.
Objective #3: Practice the writing process, including invention, drafting, peer review, revising, and editing strategies.
This objective marks the culmination of your essay writing for the course. You will put the finishing touches on a paper that represents your eloquent argumentation for a position that you believe is critically important.
Learning Activity #4: Position Essay Final Draft
Carefully consider your peers’ feedback and then revise your Research Position Based Essay accordingly. For a review of proofreading, go to:
Your finished assignment will include Title Page, essay body, and References list in APA format. The body of your essay must be a minimum of five pages long, not counting the Title and Reference pages. See the Evaluation Rubric in the “Research Based Position Essay Assignment” because that is what your facilitator will follow in his or her grading:
You do not have an option for a third draft as you did with the “Writing to Remember” Essay; however, you have been constructing this essay throughout the last month and getting your facilitator’s feedback at every step of the way.
Online students:
After you revise your draft, save it with the filename: “Your Name—Position Essay Final Draft” and submit it as an attachment to the dropbox titled Position Essay Final Draft to be graded by your facilitator.
Onsite students
After you revise your draft, load the updated version as an attachment to the dropbox titled Position Essay Final Draft no later than seven days after this last workshop.
Objective #4: Evaluate your learning in OCU’s English 1000 and 2000 courses in terms of skills and competence as a writer.
Most of you have now completed both this course and its predecessor, EN1000. It is helpful to step back, look at acquired learning, and get a sense of perspective.
Learning Activity #5: Reflection Discussion
Reflect on your learning during the course and if you took EN1000, on both of them as a set.
Do you feel more skilled and confident as a writer than when you first began?
Do you have less anxiety about writing papers as you move forward in your program?
What skills do you still need to keep improving?
How did you learn from your fellow students or receive help or insight from them?
Online students
Respond to the above in your initial post to the discussion forum titled Reflection Discussion. Use the Discussion rubric provided in the Course Expectations to ensure you have met all the criteria.
Onsite students
Engage with your fellow students about the above four questions in class. Discuss any other information relevant to how the English courses at OCU have helped you develop as a writer and as a proofreader or prepared you for your other classes and/or future writing.
