A common way to define alternative media is to see them as an alternative to mainstream media. This definition resembles the second approach to alternative media as introduced by Bailey, Cammaerts and Carpentier whereby alternative media are seen as a supplement to mainstream media, or as a counter-hegemonic critique of the mainstream (15). Within this approach, alternative media are often perceived as providing alternative representations to the dominant discourses of mainstream media as well as offering alternative organizational structures to the political economy of mainstream media.
