There are a number of myths about the American family. For this assignment you will research the various myths that surround marriage and family. First, identify and explain 4 myths about the family (this can include myths such as those found in the course materials or here). Clearly identify each myth in your discussion. Analyze the myths using the concepts and theories in the course materials. How do these myths affect the family as a social institution? How do television images contribute to myths about the family?

Next, focus on one myth that you have believed or that “seems true.” Explain how you learned and internalized the myth. How has the belief in this myth shaped your definition and perception of “family?” Research the myth and provide at least two scholarly sources that help to debunk the myth in society today. The online library is a great place to find peer-reviewed journal articles.

Your paper should be typed and double-spaced. It should be a minimum of 4 pages in length, not including the title and references pages. Follow APA formatting guidelines for the paper.
