Fire Service Supervision
Every fire should be investigated to determine its origin and cause. Although arson investigation is a part
of the fire investigator’s job, fire investigations have other purposes. All fires including those that are obviously accidental, should be investigated to determine their cause so that patterns of human behavior or equipment failure can be discovered and corrected.
Firefighters, especially those arriving first at the scene of a working fire have a unique opportunity to
make observations regarding a fire’s behavior. it is important as the first responder to retain enough of the details so that they can be recalled and shared with the investigator and included in the fire report.
As members of the first arriving unit on the scene, what can you do to preserve the evidence at the
incident while at the same time extinguishing the fire.
