Genogram and Family History

BS is a 36 year old African American male with a history of hyperlipidemia and recent diagnosis of hypertension.BS has managed these disease conditions with diet, exercise, and medications. His past surgical history includes a tonsillectomy.Occasionally he complains of migraines.BS currently lives alone in Detroit Michigan where his mother also resides.BS currently works as a manager for the Detroit Lions.BS has verbalized that his job can be stressful and demanding at times.BS verbalizes that he occasionally smokes cigars and drinks two to three beers per week.On the weekends, when he is off, BS says the he likes to play golf or relax at home and watch a good movie.

Family History

BS’s family history consists of hyperlipidemia, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer, obesity, and hypertension.BS indicates that his mother is obese, has recently been diagnosed with hyperlipidemia, and has well controlled hypertension for the last 20 years.BS also states that at the age of 50, his father has hypertension and was diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer. BS’s maternal grandmother has hyperlipidemia and has been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 70 years old and is currently in remission.BS’s maternal grandfather has a health history of hyperlipidemia, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes.BS’s paternal grandmother currently has hypertension and Type 2 diabetes.BS reports that his paternal grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 45years old, and currently has hypertension.

Based on the health history presented by BS, he has a high risk for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Not only does his familial history put him at risk for these diseases, but his African American ethnicity increases his risk as well.According to the American Heart Association (2016), hypertension is the highest it has ever been with 40 percent of African American men and women with this disease. Also, the onset of hypertension has started earlier in life (American Heart Association, 2016).Theories suggest the presence of a salt sensitive gene in African Americans, making them more prone to hypertension with the intake of small amounts of salt (American Heart Association, 2016).On the other hand, heart disease accounts for the highest mortality rate in the U.S. (American Heart Association, 2015).Hypertension, obesity, and diabetes contribute the most risk to the development of cardiovascular disease (American Heart Association, 2015).Although these risk factors are associated with family history, all have the potential to be modified with various treatments and lifestyle changes.
