Homework 3 Census Mapping
This assignment will primarily assess whether you can join a table to spatial data for making a thematic
map. It is expected that you understand fundamental concepts of relational databases, including primary
key, foreign key, field data type, and table join.
Your job is to make a map showing unemployment rates by counties in Illinois using the zip file
provided to you. The zip file contains Illinois county boundary data in shapefiles (tl_2010_17_county10)
downloaded from the TIGER/Line website. The zip file also contains the dBase file UNEM0613.DBF,
unemployment rates by county in Illinois in June 2013; the file was processed from Bureau of Labor
Statistics at http://www.bls.gov/lau/laucntycur14.txt. The map should include appropriate title, legend,
data sources, and scale bar.
To make this map, you should Join the dBase table to the shapefile based on a common key (or attribute) Make a thematic map (graduated color map) based on unemployment rate (UNEMPRT) Project a map to a coordinate system appropriate for Illinois, such as SPC IL E/W or UTM 16N Insert title, legend, texts regarding data sources, and scale bar. Make sure unemployment rates are correct for at least several counties before you submit the map after
you join the table to the shapefile. The most important criterion for grading is the “accurate” result.
Submit a map in image file format (like jpg, not mxd file!) to D2L > HW3.
