Question Respond to: The use of evidence based practice is an integral component of nursing in that is it a problem-solving approach to clinical practice that incorporates the best evidence from studies, patient preferences, and clinical expertise in decision making involving patient care (Relias, 2019). Thus far, the student has incorporated evidence based practice into her skills and care completed each clinical through following set guidelines deemed by the facility and what the student has been taught via each course. The use of evidence based practice has been drilled by each instructor and course so far taken, and ensures safe and effective practice be used for the patient and their families. Some examples of following such practices include the appropriate use of handwashing, the care of patients with bedsores, and the time limited to placement and removal of IVs. Prior to the start of this nursing program, the student had experience in healthcare through positions being a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. While most of these positions included the care of patients with cognitive and mobility issues in facilities like nursing homes and rehab centers, the student gained a lot of insight on evidence based practices performed by the nurses there. However, the job the student currently has now is not related to the healthcare system. While the student has not personally conducted or been a part of any evidence based research, she believes she has an understanding of what it entails and the importance of it as taught through past courses. She understands these practices are tested and subject to change with the goals of keeping the patient safe and improving their chances for recovery. Research and evidence based practice is important to the student personally as it allows a set guideline and protocol to be followed. This not only secures the patients best health outcomes but as well allows the nurse to practice safe and prevent mistakes if followed correctly. This practice is vital for the larger nursing profession as it keeps nurses up to date and knowledgeable on the safest and most effective forms of care. It provides nurses the opportunity to be a part of or follow the best forms of care and decision making and ensures both nurse and patient satisfaction.Relias (2019). Evidence-Based Practice. Question Eliminating African American HIV aids disparitiesMinority groups in the United States carry a significant and disproportionate burden ofspecific diseases. For example, while African Americans make up only 12% of the U.S.population, this group accounted for 44% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the United States in2010 (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2013). In 2010, Hispanics were 1.2 times (Office ofMinority Health, 2012) more likely to be obese and almost 2 times (Office of MinorityHealth, 2013) more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than their non-Hispanic whitecounterparts. There has been much discussion about the type of effective interventions for promotingwell-being and improving health outcomes in all Americans, especially for minoritygroups. Medical social workers excel at providing direct services to individual patients.Given current efforts to shift the paradigm to population-centered interventions, socialworkers must modify their skills, broaden their perspective, and consider evidence-based interventions. To prepare for this Assignment, select a public health issue of interest to you (e.g.,obesity, diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS, mental health).By Day 7In a 5- to 7-page report: Describe the specific population(s) (ethnic or racial group, homosexuals, veterans, women, children, adolescents, etc.) affected by the health issue you selected. Explainhow this population is discriminately affected by the health issue you selected. Explain the primary determinants of the health issue. Then, explain how thesedeterminants contribute to the disparities in care for the population. Explain what specific social work interventions you might implement to address thishealth issue, reduce or eliminate disparities, and improve health outcomes. Identify some challenges you may encounter when implementing the interventions. Then, explain the strategies you might employ to address these challenges. Explain the advocacy roles a medical social worker might play in addressing thedisparities in health care for the health issues and population you selected.
