Laws and morals are normative because they specify what must be done and mark the boundaries between unacceptable and acceptable conduct. From these examples of racism and segregation in the courts, segregation in the courtroom confirmed, augmented, and approved the dominant social norms of white supremacy and the application of law outside the courtroom walls. Racism in the courts is symptoms of racism in the broader society reflecting the ideologies, suppositions, myths of anti-black social norms.

Some laws are immoral since they are unfair but sometimes because they are harmful or counterproductive in some instances reprehensible and egregious. A legal system that lacks adequate laws can have immoral effects even if the contents of those laws are not just. Examples are laws concerning procedure and evidence in courtrooms that often leads to acquittals of guilty defendants. They sometimes lead to convictions and punishment to known or those who are likely innocent.

In addition, not all morality is enshrined within the law because in essence law is incomplete. Many wrong doings are not anticipated and therefore they are not made illegal until somebody invents and uses them in a way that mistreats others. These practices are immoral and wrong from inception but not unlawful until the law catches up. To reflect a change in attitudes morals will consistently change every time to reflect a change in attitudes and the law should also strive to keep up with these circumstances.

Indeed, there are changes in laws that are caused by changes in the society. The history of law entails adapting the law to life changing needs caused by changes in the society.
