Please watch the following video and then complete the experiment at home for this week’s lab actvitiy.

You will need:

1) Water

2) Potato (or other crunchy vegetable, such as a carrot)

3) 2 bowls or cups

4) Knife

Some tip: Please make sure to cut the potato slices to the same size as much as possible. This will be crucial in helping you analyze the results better.

Extra steps: Please leave the potatoes in the water for 1.5 hour (90 min) instead of 20 minutes as stated in the video.

You will then have to submit a small lab report about the experiment you conducted. Please make sure to take before and after pictures of your potatoes to include in the report.

Please give a title to the experiment we performed.

I.                  Introduction:

State the purpose of the experiment in general terms.

Supply a paragraph or two about how the basic background information.Explain diffusion, osmosis, semipermeable membrane Ect…

II.               Hypothesis

State your hypothesis. What do you think will happen?

III.           Materials

What materials did we use when performing this experiment?

IV.            Procedure/Methods:

Explain (in paragraph form) how you performed the experiment. What were the steps?

V.               Results:

  • Provide pictures showing your results 
  • Compare and contrast the potatoes measurements as best as you can (if you can, weigh the potatoes (like on a kitchen scale).

 VI.     Discussions/Conclusions:

  • Present your findings from the experiment.
  • Give reasons why you think you got your outcome.  Make it plain, simple.  Make factual statements such as “my results show…”

In this experiment, you will dialyze a solution of glucose and starch to observe:

The directional movement of glucose and starch.
The effect of a selectively permeable membrane on the diffusion of these molecules.
