Language and Tone Paper

1000-1500 words on the short stories “The Astronomer’s Wife”, “The Shawl” or “The Babysitter”.

In the first parragraph include author’s name, title of the story, and brief synopsis of the story in which only the main points are covered. the word “central idea” will be used. state central idea of the story at the end of the first paragraph and examples and quotes for the second paragraph to support this idea.

Talk about how the piece was written and why the author chose to write it that way. Identify at least 3 of the devices of language (such as Diction, Denotation, Connotation, and Imagery) Each language will get its own paragraph. Use textual analysis. Examine how those devices add to the overall artistic unity of the story as well as how they relate to other elements. Please mention elements besides the central Idea.

This essay will also include the identification of the tone of the story in its own paragraph. The tone is how the author wants the audience to feel about the story; How something is written. Please devote a paragraph each to the key elements which work together to make up the story’s tone. Back up with textual evidence and cite work at the end of the essay.
