You are required to write a 2,000-word business report and include your individual presentation in the appendices (100% weighting)

 

Learning outcomes

1. Review and critically evaluate contemporary research and debates in the field leadership and human resource management in order to make informed decisions with regard to improving performance of individuals and groups within organisations.
2. Apply relevant knowledge to critically assess the relationships between leaders and followers for the purpose of identifying the potential for combining theory and practice and how it can contribute to the development of professional practice in a range of organisational situations.
3. Critically discuss limitations of a range of theories, tools and techniques in leadership and human resource management
4. Solve complex problems in the area of leadership and HRM generating feasible solutions that provide equitable consideration of those impacted

 

Task

Investigate leadership approaches and HRM techniques, which assist in dealing with the specific challenges you identify in an organisation of your choosing. You should choose ONE area from the topics listed below:

  • Introduction of technology into organisations; you should focus on the negative impacts e.g. resistance and fear
  • Gender and opportunity or progression – you should choose ONE of the following; Male or Female and genderisation of work or Male or Female or LGBTQ+ entry or progression at work. Issues included might be lack role models, poor networking opportunities, stereotyping and bias
  • Generational Differences; you should focus on two generations only; you might consider career perspectives, values and beliefs.

 

You are required to submit your plan of work in 3 stages.  This will allow for formative feedback on your work, though will also attract marks in the summative submission.  A total of 15% of the overall grade is allocated to these 3 stages (5% for each submission) confirmed in final grade release.

 

Stage 1 – submission of company and challenge with references on one power point slide in Week 4

Stage 2 – submission of company, challenge and theories to be used to resolve/minimise the identified issues in week 7 submit 2 slides only.

Stage 3 – final plan of report with full reference list to be submitted in week 9 submit 3 slides only

 

N.B.  You will NOT be required to deliver the presentation other than in writing.

 

You should provide;

  • Summary
  • Contents
  • An introduction which includes a brief overview of the organisation (you should NOT give a history but rather the purpose, current operations, competitors, numbers of employees, market share, competitors etc.)
  • You should also provide clear and detailed information about the chosen challenge which MUST be from the list provided above
  • Main body which reviews and justifies the choices of relevant Leadership approaches incorporating the process perspective; leader, influence, individuals/teams and goals.
  • You should also identify and critically evaluate relevant HRM techniques that combine with the leadership approaches to address the challenge and maximise potential for minimising negative impacts; link to specific practical examples
  • Conclusions
  • Recommendations, which are based on, research as well as identifying any limitations. The recommendations should be directed at the organisation/employees/teams and be related to the organisation you have used throughout the report. They should not be general but specific.
  • Reference list (references and reference list should follow the conventions of a recognised referencing system)
  • Appendices; you should include a fully completed and validated copy of your engagement and contribution schedule.

 

 

 

 

Your work should:

  • be based on evidence of research in the leadership and HRM fields of study linked to real life practical examples
  • you should NOT merely describe theories, tools and techniques you should consider the usefulness and point out the limitations using practical examples to illustrate your points; you need to include a critical evaluation of the theories and techniques based on analysis of the theories used
  • language should be business language it SHOULD NOT BE HIGHLY ACADEMIC or verbose
  • not exceed 2000 words in the main report, this limit includes in text references but does not include the reference list of the summary.
  • be fully and correctly referenced using the Harvard conventions of referencing
  • logically organised with good use of report format; page numbers, section numbering, headings, paragraphs, diagrams and graphs only if relevant
  • well proof read
  • include imagery, colour in keeping with traditional business reports
  • have student identification number BUT NOT your name
  • be aimed at an informed audience; therefore there is no need for descriptions of theories. You should apply, discuss and recommend based on research, NOT describe theory and techniques from the leadership and HRM literature.
  • Font size 12, Times New Roman or Arial, double line spaced, with use of bold for headings

 

 

Finally;

You should start your work early.  Take time to read, reflect, discuss and consult tutors for support, leave time to proof read, edit your work and ensure it is as good as it can be before submission.

 

Assessment Criteria

Clear identification of issues in modern settings, which are specific and researched in an organisation, listed publicly (20%)

Effective use of theories/aspects of theories, tools and techniques, which are researched and referenced – discussion and critical evaluation of how these minimise/resolve the challenges identified with reference to any limitations (30%)

Critical and independent thinking, supported by effective research (20%)

Well structured, logical, cohesive and integrated with effective use of paragraphs, headings and sections, colour, imagery.  Effective communication with use of plain business language, spell checked, and punctuated (15%)

Presentation – 3 slides; submitted as indicated above in weeks 4, 7 and 9 (15%)
