High-silica rhyolite contains 75 to 80 percent silica. Rhyolitic volcanoes tend to erupt magma explosively commonly also producing abundant ash and pumice which can rise into the lower stratosphere affecting weather systems far from the volcano source. The last such event was the 1991Mount Pinatubo eruption which produced a very large stratospheric injection resulting in a 10% reduction in sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface by roughly 10%. This led to a decrease in Northern Hemisphere (Links to an external site.)
average temperatures of 0.5-0.6 °C (0.9-1.1 °F). The stratospheric cloud from the eruption persisted in the atmosphere for three years after the eruption.
