literary analysis of ″little miss sunshine ″ topic″ effect of a dysfunctional home
Essay 2
Essay Options (choose one):
1) Write a literary analysis of Little Miss Sunshine, focusing on theme. Remember that theme has relevance beyond the work itself, so consider how the theme of the film is reflective of, or a metaphor for, an issue of family, society, culture, or humanity. Your thesis should indicate what you believe the film is saying about your chosen theme. Include appropriate elements (not plot) from the Literary Elements handout in your discussion. For example, you may choose to focus on how character, setting, and imagery reflect the overall theme.
o Some possible themes: family relationships; winning and losing or success and failure; generational attitudes; non-traditional roles; death/suicide; coming of age/loss of innocence; self-determination; standards of beauty; sexualization of children; secrets and lies; character analysis of one, two, or three characters, but your analysis must focus on a specific theme or point. For example, analyze the character of Dwayne as the embodiment of Nietzsche’s philosophy, or Olive’s loss of innocence, or Grandpa, Richard, and Dwayne as representing generational ideas of being a man. These are just a few ideas; it is by no means a complete list of potential themes and you are free, even encouraged, to define your own theme.
2) Analyze the use of magical realism in “The Rememberer” and “The Company of Wolves,” specifically discussing how magical realism contributes to the development of a particular theme in each work.
3) Analyze and discuss “The Company of Wolves,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Little Red Cap” using one or more of the prompts in the RRH assignment as the basis for a more in-depth literary analysis. Alternately, develop your own theme and thesis about these three works. Discuss the works and the theme in some detail with me and get my approval in advance (either make an appointment with me, talk to me about it in or after class, or email me a written proposal).
4) Consider “The Rocking-Horse Winner” as a “fractured” fairy tale about a boy taking on the impossible quest of freeing his mother from a family “curse.” You must define specific elements of a fairy tale and discuss how the story fulfills that criteria in your analysis. You may come up with your own list of fairy tale criteria or you may use one of the following: “a ‘distant singsong’ opening; a brave young boy . . . challenged by his ‘true love’; the boy rides off into a dreamland where he struggles and succeeds at attaining secret knowledge; he brings the secret knowledge back and with it wins treasure houses of gold, giving all to his love” (Janice Harris, “Levels of Meaning in Lawrence’s ‘The Rocking Horse Winner’” The Story and Its Writer: An Introduction to Short Fiction. 6th ed., Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2003, p. 1439), or “A ‘Once up on a time’ like opening; a beautiful princess under a spell; a young, unlikely hero undertaking a quest to discover a magic ‘potient’ or cure, which will break the spell, lift the curse, and release the princess; the successful acquisition of the formula; the application of the formula in order to release the princess (“‘The Rocking-Horse Winner as a ‘Fractured’ Fairy Tale,” author unknown, Indiana University, School of Liberal Arts. This article is no longer available online, so if you use this definition, just cite the title of the article in your essay and don’t worry about a WC page entry).
5) Use “The Conversion of the Jews” and any other work of your choice from this section to analyze and discuss how the works explore or reveal the theme of suppression of the individual or issues of authority.
6) Analyze and discuss how “The Conversion of the Jews” and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” explore the theme of parent/child role reversal and its effects on children, specifically considering how and why each boy tries to “save” his family.
7) Choose any two works to analyze using a common theme; however, you must discuss the works and the theme in some detail with me and get my approval in advance (either make an appointment with me, talk to me about it in or after class, or email me a written proposal).
