  1. Explain how the behavioral approach differs from the contingency approach to management communication.
  2. Read Case 1-3 of the textbook and answer the three questions related to the case. Also explain how management communication would have to change for Kathy if she were to take the company internationally and employ people over the age of 75.
  3. Read Case 2-3 of the textbook and answer the True/False and essay questions.
  4. In your own words, explain the three layers of managerial communication. Then think of a specific business situation you’ve experienced where there was a miscommunication. Use the onion model to explain where and how (which layer) the communication issue occurred, and how you would apply the material from Chapter 2 to ensure this type of failure doesn’t happen again.

WEEK 2 Assignment:

Answer these essay questions:

  1. Explain how communication technology has advanced in the United States in the past five years and how these changes have affected the management process. Include how these changes impact older works and workers from different cultural backgrounds. Then predict how you think communication technology may change in the next five years and the impact it could potentially have.
  2. Read Case 3-3 of the textbook and complete the Project requirement.
  3. Read the Back to School (Case 7-1) of the textbook and answer the questions.
  4. Complete Sections 1, 2, and 5 (A, B, and E for hard-copy textbooks) in the Exercises for Small Groups at the end of Chapter 7. Also explain which exercise you found most difficult and which you found least difficult, and why.

WEEK 3 Assignment:

Answer these essay questions:

  1. Read Case 8-3 of the textbook and write the required refusal letter using the principles discussed in Chapter 8. Explain what you found difficult about writing such a letter.
  2. Using the principles discussed in Chapter 8, write a business memo appropriate for a division manager of an appliance wholesaler to write to his sales staff regarding a new company policy that – due to budget cutbacks – changes their vehicle reimbursement from .45 per mile to a flat fee of $240 per month, which is likely to be less than what most salespeople are currently receiving.
  3. Choose between Case 9.2 or 9.3 of the textbook and complete the required report.
  4. Conduct research online to find a written business report that includes visual aids that don’t follow the general rules outlined in Chapter 9. Write a short critique that summarizes the problems with the visual aids and make a solid recommendation on how to improve the visual aids for greater impact, per the rules in Chapter 8. Be sure to submit a link to the original report with your write up.

  1. Explain how each of the techniques of active listening should be implemented during an important conference call with a client who is explaining his needs for a project to your team members, who are in multiple locations.
  2. Read Case 10-3 of the textbook and answer the related questions.
  3. Search online to find images of high-profile people (politicians, celebrities, etc.) in situations where his or her nonverbal signals show one of the six functions of non-verbal communication: complementing, accenting, contradicting, repeating, regulating, and substituting. (Find one image for each characteristic and paste the photo.) Explain how you identified what their non-verbal communication is saying and whether it matches the verbal messaging they are delivering, if they are speaking.
  4. Read Case 11-3 of the textbook and answer the related question.
