Dr. Harried order on how patients should be treated is ethical. He is following the regulations based on the patient’s type of insurance. Patient M., is probably insured by the national health insurance. This type of health insurance programme only covers specific treatments. Therefore, patient M., himself is aware of what he should expect when he is seeking treatment in the hospital. When the doctor realises that M., does not have an all-inclusive type of insurance, he orders him to be taken an x-ray since the NHS does not provide for the MRI scan cover. Besides, the country’s health system consists of majorly two sectors. That is the private and public-which is provided by the government under NHS. It’s up to the patient to choose between the two. If a patient prefers feels like he or she is not receiving the right kind of treatment, then he is a the liberty to seek treatment from the private sector as it provides patients with more options considered to the public one. Additionally, the medical case before the doctor is not an emergency.
The doctor’s ethic dictates that once a patient is brought to the hospital, regardless of the patients financial situation or type of insurance, the patients condition should be stabilised before being referred to a government facility–if he funded by the NHS. Patient M’s case is not an emergency. Therefore, the patient is not in any wrong by ordering treatment according to the patient’s insurance cover. If the case would have been an emergency, then he would have defied the doctor’s ethics conduct. For this case, the doctor is within the ethics conduct.
Dr. Harried has the responsibility to decrease the spending of the nation health system (NHS). He is at a position where he is overseeing the use of the health resources. Proper use of resources means that he the national health system will be spending more less therefore saving. Let’s consider the two patients’ cases. If M’s treatment would have included an MRI scan, then the costs included in his bill, NHS would have paid more than what is necessarily required to pay. This means that the government will have to pay more in provision of health services. Further, it’s an act of honesty when the doctor sticks to the policy guidelines based on the medical insurance covers.
Offering extra services to people whose cover does not include the particular service, will increase laziness among the people. They will not be striving to work hard to meet their preferred or required health needs. More people depending on the national health system will mean more expenditure. Running of the hospitals requires maintenance. Funds are required to facilitate this. We can clearly see in our case that Dr. Harried is facing shortage of funds to maintain the patient’s information system. The employees also require to be paid since they work for the hospital regardless of whether the hospital charges its patients or not. The doctor is also aware of this and that’s why he would not offer extra services at the hospital which will not be paid for. For the system to run smoothly its revenues should be superseding the expenses at least.
In conclusion, Dr. Harried’s responsibility entails more than just treating patients. Along with treatment of patients, there are specific code of conduct that he is expected to maintain. He should honour the policies concerning the health insurance covers as this will ensure good management of resources. Dr. Harried’s actions to allocate treatment are all in good faith.
