The U.S. fought several major military conflicts and many more minor battles expanding the American military presence to more than one hundred countries around the globe. With American military expansion came major shifts in the conduct of war, the development of professional militaries, the justification for using military force, and the importance of American
public opinion.
Write a paper focusing on one of the topics below. Address the issues associated with your chosen topic. Choose one of the below topics.
 American Military Objectives & Conduct World War II, Cold War, and the Global War on Terror
  • –  Mission: Compare and contrast the U.S. military objectives in three different eras – World War II, the
    Cold War, and the Global War on Terror. For each era, identify (a) the principle objective for using military force, (b) the enemy being countered by U.S. military action, and (c) the desired goal of the military action. Be sure to discuss the objective behind preemptive war and whether this is justified.
  • –  Conduct of War: Describe the U.S. military transition from total war to limited war to asymmetric war against non-state actors. What factors brought the shift in the warfare being conducted?
     American Military Institutions: World War II to the Present
  • –  Conscription versus Volunteer Military: Explain when and why the U.S. military used a draft to field the
    military. Then, explain when the U.S. military began the shift to an all-volunteer force. Critique the strengths and weaknesses of each type of military. Use specific examples from American warfare to assess whether it is better for the U.S. to use a conscription or volunteer force.
  • –  Officer Corps and Professional Military Education: Identify the change in officer development from WWII to the present day. How have officers been selected and trained during the major eras of conflict? How has the military’s professional military education system influenced the development of such an officer corps?
  • –  Civilian Leadership: Describe the emergence of a civilian leadership core in the Department of Defense. Evaluate whether civilian leadership of the military is a good or bad thing for the U.S. Outline the advantages and disadvantages of having a civilian leadership cadre in charge of the military.
     American Military Technology: WWII to the present
– Technology Dominance: Describe the progression of American military technology across all three
branches of the Department of Defense (Army, Navy, Air Force). What major advances in American military technology changed the conduct of warfare? How did the U.S. military achieve this technological
dominance? What were the effects of nuclear technology?
– Role of the Private Sector: What is the role of the private sector and the military industrial complex in
achieving technological advances? What are some of the drawbacks from the U.S. approach to military technology?
 American Public Opinion
  • –  Importance: How has American public opinion and support for military intervention changed since the
    beginning of World War II? Assess whether American public opinion is more or less important today than
    during World War II?
  • –  The Media: Describe how media coverage of the U.S. military has changed since the start of World War
    II. How has the media’s coverage changed in the past 70 years? Is the media’s coverage of a conflict more or less influential than in the past? Explain your answer with specific examples.
