Need help responding to these 2 discussion post Topic Political Climate The National Labor Relations Board

consists of five members, who serve staggered terms and who are appointed by the president of the United States. How do you think the president’s political outlook plays into who is appointed to sit on the board? How might this impact the decisions made by the board from presidential term to term Kim McGrath  How do you think the president’s political outlook plays into who is appointed to sit on the board?  I think the Presidents political outlook weighs heavy over who is appointed to sit on the board because the President will often appoint those who share similar political views. According to labor specialist Professor James Gross, presidential administration can both make and change labor policies without legislative action by going straight through the NLRB (Turner, 2006). He also mentions that studies have found strong evidence that Board members are often influenced by their own ideological preferences and those of appointing Presidents (Turner,2006). This procedure seems toe quite alarming, as ultimately this means that labor policies seem to depend primarily on who won the last election. However, 2006’s NLRB chairholder Robert Battista disagrees. He states that the boards institutional collegiality is what helps maintain an unbiased and sense of impartiality of the board (Turner,2006). How might this impact the decisions made by the board from presidential term to term?                 Board members are elected to a five-year term, and Presidential terms, if not reelected, are four years. This means that board members will carry over from one president to the other. When their term is up, I do believe the President will appoint a new member with similar political views as himself. In the interim while the board members from previous presidents are finishing their term, I think this does help the board in the sense of having an equal playing field and allows the board to have views of both pro management and pro-union. The problems I think that carry over with a new president is the Boards ability to “flip-flop” the policies. What may have been considered favorable in court last year, may not have the same outcome in court this year. Due to this, I do believe that the Presidents political outlook plays a big role in the decisions and favors of the Board members.   Seaquist, G. (2015). (Seaquist, 2015).  The president chooses the board members, so as with anything, He will choose people that favor his views to make decisions that would be favorable to the President.  I think it is interesting that The General Counsel is appointed by the President also. Although they are not a part of the board, I would assume they share the same views since they are appointed by the same person.  In my opinion, it would make sense for both parties to resolve a labor dispute at the regional level to have an unbiased judgment. The board can change decisions or whether they favor labor or management based on who is office at the time. This can make for inconsistent rulings as different presidents are elected. Seaquist, G.
