Now that you have located available research on your PICOT question, you will examine what the research indicates about nursing practices. Connecting research evidence and findings to actual decisions and tasks that nurses complete in their daily practice is essentially what evidence-based practice is all about. This final component of the Course Project asks you to translate the evidence and data from your literature review into authentic practices that can be adopted to improve health care outcomes. In addition, you will also consider possible methods and strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to your colleagues and to the broader health care field.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

To prepare:

Consider Parts 1 and 2 of your Course Project. How does the research address your PICOT question?

With your PICOT question in mind, identify at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in two or more of the articles from your literature review. Consider what the evidence indicates about how this practice contributes to better outcomes.

Explore possible consequences of failing to adopt the evidence-based practice that you identified.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Consider how you would disseminate information about this evidence-based practice throughout your organization or practice setting. How would you communicate the importance of the practice?

To complete:

In a 3- to 4-page paper:

Restate your PICOT question and its significance to nursing practice.

Summarize the findings from the articles you selected for your literature review. Describe at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in the articles. Justify your response with specific references to at least 2 of the articles.

Explain how the evidence-based practice that you identified contributes to better outcomes. In addition, identify potential negative outcomes that could result from failing to use the evidence-based practice.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Outline the strategy for disseminating the evidence-based practice that you identified throughout your practice setting. Explain how you would communicate the importance of the practice to your colleagues. Describe how you would move from disseminating the information to implementing the evidence-based practice within your organization. How would you address concerns and opposition to the change in practice?

This part of the Course Project is due. It should be combined with the other two components of the Course Project and turned in as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.

Note: In addition, include a 1-page summary of your project.

You will combine Parts 1, 2, and 3 of your Course Project (assigned in Weeks 2, 4, and 8 respectively) into one cohesive and cogent paper.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

For this final iteration, you will need to:

Submit your paper to Grammarly and SafeAssign through the Walden Writing Center. Based on the Grammarly and SafeAssign reports, revise your paper as necessary.

Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The School of Nursing Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available from the Walden University website found in this week’s Learning Resources). All papers submitted must use this formatting.

This guide will help you learn how to pick appropriate keywords, combine them to create effective searches to support your PICOT, and find five articles, including one systematic review and one integrative review, if available.

In Week 2 the Final Project is introduced, and you must develop your PICOT and submit it along with a list of ten keywords relating to your PICOT topic.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

In Week 4 (due Week 5) you need to find five research articles relating to your PICOT question, including one systematic review and one integrative review, if possible.

Keyword development from PICOT

The following example demonstrates how to use your PICOT to choose possible keywords:

In the NICU, what is the effect of handwashing on infection control compared with hand sanitizers?

Keywords: Neonatal, Handwashing, Infection Control

Synonyms: NICU, Neonate, “Hand Washing”, “Hand Sanitizers”, “Hand Rubs”, “Hand Disinfection”, Disinfectants, “Cross Infection”

Note: Putting a phrase in quotation marks tells the database to search for these words as a phrase and not as individual words. For instance, the quoted phrase “Infection Control” will be used throughout this demonstration to tell the database to search for it as a phrase.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Resources for Developing Synonyms

  • Subject Terms are associated with every article in a database. When an article is added to a database, the database will assign subject terms to it from the database’s list of subjects. Most articles will have from 3 to 12 subject terms. For more information see: Subject Terms & Index Searches guide.
    • CINAHL Headings are specific to CINAHL (Using the CINAHL/MeSH Headings Feature in EBSCOhost tutorial available from EBSCO).
  • MeSH Browser is an online vocabulary look-up aid available for use with MeSH® (Medical Subject Headings). It is designed to help quickly locate descriptors of possible interest and to show the hierarchy in which descriptors of interest appear.
  • Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary provides more than 65,000 medical definitions.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Search for research articles using CINAHL

When searching on complex topics, you’ll want to use multiple search terms and Boolean operators, both in the search boxes and between the search boxes, to get the best results. This Quick Answer will teach you more about Boolean operators:NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Here is an example of how to put together a complex search in CINAHL:

1.  Access the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database.

Note: If you need help accessing the database, refer to the database access instructions at the top of this page.

2. Once you are in the database, use the search boxes to enter your keywords. For example, in the first search box, enter:

Neonatal OR NICU

Note: You can use OR to link together your synonyms, or related words, in a search box, allowing the database to search more broadly.

3. In the second search box enter:

Handwashing OR “Hand Washing” OR “Hand Rubs” OR “Hand Disinfection”

4. In the third search box enter:

“Infection Control” OR “Cross Infection”

Here is what your search boxes should look like:NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

5. To limit your results to only peer-reviewed articles, go below the search boxes and click in the box under Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.

Click here to see this image in context.

6. Then click on the Search button to run your search.

Search for systematic reviews using Cochrane

Systematic reviews are considered the highest level of evidence available, and Cochrane Systematic Reviews are the gold standard.

Here is an example of how to search for a Cochrane Systematic Review using the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews:NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

1. Access The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Note: If you need help accessing the database, refer to the database access instructions at the top of this page.

“Infection Control” OR “Cross Infection”

Here is what your search boxes should look like:

5. Then click on the Search button to run your search.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

All results will be Cochrane Systematic Reviews and available in full text.

If you do not find what you need in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, you can search using the same strategy in our other filtered databases that contain systematic reviews:

Search for systematic reviews using CINAHL

CINAHL contains many systematic reviews published in journals. You can search for systematic reviews on your topic by limiting your search to only systematic reviews. Here is how you can search for systematic reviews in CINAHL:

1.  Access the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database.

Note: If you need help accessing the database, refer to the database access instructions at the top of this page.

2. Once you are in the database, use the search boxes to enter your keywords. For example, in the first search box, enter:

Neonatal OR NICU

3. In the second search box enter:

Handwashing OR “Hand Washing” OR “Hand Rubs” OR “Hand Disinfection”

4. In the third search box enter:

“Infection Control” OR “Cross Infection”

Here is what your search boxes should look like:

5. To limit your results to only systematic review articles, scroll down the page below the search boxes until you find the Publication Type box.

6. In the Publication Type box select Systematic Review by finding it in the list and clicking on it (it will then be highlighted).

7. Click on the Search button to run your search.

If you don’t find what you need in the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database, you can use the same search strategy in our medical database:

Search for integrative reviews using CINAHL

Integrative reviews differ from systematic reviews in that they include non-experimental, or qualitative studies, in their review of the literature. Integrative reviews are less common than systematic reviews, so you may not be able to find one on your research topic.

Here is an example of how to search for an integrative review:

1.  Access the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database.

Note: If you need help accessing the database, refer to the database access instructions at the top of this page.NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

5. Add a fourth row to your search and enter:

Integrative

Note: To add another search box, click on the + sign at the end of the third row of search boxes (see below).NURS 5052 Final Project Essay Paper

Here is what your search boxes should look like:

6. To limit your results to only peer-reviewed articles, go below the search boxes and click in the box under Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.

7. Then click on the Search button to run your search.
