Old Testament

The main theme of Job is the search for disinterested righteousness. That theme is found in Satan’s question in Job 1:9 – “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Then Satan tells God that God has given Job an incredible amount of stuff and a perfect family. Why wouldn’t Job serve God? Job is being paid amazingly by God! But the Satan says if all that is taken away, Job would give up on God. So God lets Satan take away Job’s wealth, his children, and his health. Not the way we want to see God.

Job does not give up his faith in God, but he certainly questions and challenges God and destroys the arguments of his friends.

Answer the following questions:

1.Why would God put his faithful servant through something like this? Support your answer with verses from Scripture.
2.What do you think about Satan’s question? Is it a legitimate question? Why or why not?
3.Do you think anybody does serve God for nothing? Why or why not?
