Reality TV Analysis
In this assignment analyze — from a social-psychological perspective — the behaviors and events depicted in a reality television show of your choice. You are not being asked to critique the show in terms of its value as entertainment. Rather, you should think carefully about the human actions and events portrayed in the show. Then, to make sense of this material, apply what you’ve learned so far this semester regarding the factors that predict and explain human social behavior, particularly with regard to the self. However, this assignment is comprehensive: I urge you to bring any/all concepts encountered to this point in this course that relate to the issues, interactions, and behaviors portrayed. Assignment. Evaluate what is happening on one of the reality shows that involves competition (e.g., American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Biggest Loser, America’s Next Top Model). Write a report discussing how the material in the text on self-knowledge relates to what happens on these shows. Be sure to include a short introduction to orient the reader, as well as a short discussion to tie things together. View at least two or three different episodes of the show you choose. Then, after reviewing your notes and readings, identify three social-psychological principles that appear to be operating in the events or individuals depicted in the show (e.g., social comparisons, self-perception, etc.). Other than the potential prize, why might people compete to be on these shows? How do the contestants react to negative feedback? Why might they react that way? For each social psychology principle that you identify:(a) briefly describe the relevant scene;(b) describe in detail the social-psychological principle you believe is relevant, bringing in research findings as much as possible (that is, briefly state the findings of relevant experiments you’ve read or heard about); and(c) elaborate on how the selected scene conforms and/or fails to conform to the social-psychological principle you have identified, as well as to the research findings that support the principle (for example, describe how the scene is similar to or different from relevant experiments you’ve read or heard about).Writing the Paper.
