Social Media’s Influence on the Youth
There has been research on the effect of social media on the youth. Zeitel-Bank & Ute (10) explain, “There is a broad range of diverse interpretations related to the usefulness of social media as a powerful source of communication and learning.” Nowadays young people do not want to make real-life connections. They live their lives on the internet. They have friends online and expose their lives there. This ends up creating positive and negative effects on their actual lives. In addition, social media is seen as an excellent platform for marketing and capturing good memories. Gone are times when a person could sit and have a normal conversation. Even on dates, people will be on their phones. Notably, social media is a great platform to create social networks and broaden a person’s point of view on life. One can learn about other cultures as well as interact with people around the world. Social media has made it easy for people to do business all other the globe without international business physical locations. All a person has to do is appropriately market his or her product online; then they can sell it to anyone in the world. Social media has therefore helped young people get into business and grow their lives financially.
Positive Effects
Social media provides a platform for exposure. Some people have landed jobs because of social media. Social media lets people display their talents and capabilities. One never knows who is watching their social media; therefore, the platform should be used for positive things. When social media was created, it was supposed to be a platform where people can easily interact as well as act as a marketing stage.
Negative Effects
However, the youth have been using social media for the wrong things. The young people use social media to post every detail of their lives (they are online, scrolling, texting, trolling and video sharing). They do not have any private lives, and this makes them targets for all the negativity on social media. The first adverse effect of social media to young people is bullying. it is evident that the internet never forgets and the minute a person posts their whole life on social media, they open up space for people’s opinions. Cyber bullying is dangerous to the extent of people committing suicide. Siddiqui & Tajinder (71) express that “Dependency of youth on social media is now leading to addiction.” Young people still do not know how to process emotions and cannot handle the negative things people say online. They, therefore, end up getting into depression, which can lead to self-harm.
Social media also takes away young people from the real world. It has been said so many times that the lives people portray online, covers only a tiny part of their daily lives. The things they see online and end up wanting to live the lives of their favorite celebrities influence young people. Most celebrities post fake lives for fame; hence, there is nothing real to be emulated. It is challenging to convince young people about real and artificial life. They end up focusing their lives on having an experience like the one they see online. For instance, there is an obsession with weight for young girls. Celebrities post pictures about their bodies and the products they use to get in shape. Young people end up taking the information and applying it to their lives. They end up becoming depressed if they do not get the results they want.
Possible Solutions
Shabir, et. al, (149) observes that, “The social media campaign is creating deeper division in the society, social and political groups, ethnic communities, racial entities and cultural groups.” Adults need to talk to young people about the positive and negative effects of social media. These young minds are still growing; hence require to be shown in the right direction. The young people need guidance and not to be condemned. Condemning them only makes, them want to become rebellious and prove a point about social media. Importantly, social media is no place for people to post every step of one’s life. Some individuals make it their life’s mission to break people on the internet. They have nothing good to say about other people’s lives. social media has led to the downfall of many relationships. Studies argue the fact that if a link is strong, it cannot be broken by the internet. However, this is not the case, since we are all human and with times, they become affected by the opinions of other people. Some things such as relationships are supposed to be private. It does not mean that a person cannot post their relationship; it means that they should be mindful of how much they show the world. The best things in life happen in silence. Posting things online means that the world knows about a person’s whole life and this opens them up to dangerous situations such as kidnapping, stalking, theft, and even rape. Everyone on social media knows how and where to find you because it is online. Young people should be educated about social media and the best way to use social media positively. There are things a young person can post, and they end up ruining their lives in the future. For this reason, young people should all be mindful of the content we show the world.
