Summative Evidence-Based Practice
State the nursing practice problem and describe why it is important and relevant. This paragraph corresponds to the introduction to nursing practice problem found on the grading rubric. You should choose a nursing practice problem that you are familiar with and one that is of interest to you. The practice problem should be succinctly and clearly stated. The significance of practice problem should also be evident from your description. Locate one scholarly article that supports the practice problem and include citation to the article in this introduction.
Clinical Question
Develop a focused, patient-oriented clinical question using the PICO format below and as discussed in your textbooks. Your clinical question is based on the nursing practice problem you discussed in your introduction. A well-developed clinical question will assist you with locating the answer in your literature review.
PICO Format
P – Patient population or patient condition of interest
I – Intervention
C – Comparison
O – Outcome
Specific textbook reading:
1. Conceptual Foundations: The Bridge to Professional Nursing Practice text by Friberg and Creasia, page 246, “Framing the Clinical Question” section
2. Evidence Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research (4th ed.) by Schmidt and Brown, pages 110-123, “How to Search for Evidence,” section 4.4
3. Evidence Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research by Schmidt and Brown, pages 84-86, “Formulating EBP Questions” section
Discovery and Research Process
Complete a literature review for research articles that address the clinical question you developed. After this is completed, review each article and choose four articles that best address your clinical question. Each article should be reviewed for level of evidence. Describe the process you used to identify four nursing research articles you chose as appropriate to address this nursing practice problem. Make sure that the description of your research process is very clear – so that the reader can follow steps easily. You should identify the keywords you used in your searches, which search databases you used to find the articles, how you decided to keep certain articles and how you discarded others, etc. Again, this should be very clear. A minimum of one Level 1 or 2 evidence article is included and identified as such.
Specific textbook reading:
1. Conceptual Foundations: The Bridge to Professional Nursing Practice (6th ed.) by Friberg and Creasia, pages 246-247, “Levels of Evidence” section
2. Evidence Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research (4th ed.) by Schmidt and Brown, pages 99-101, “Understanding Types of Reviews” section
3. Evidence Based Practice for Nurses: Appraisal and Application of Research (4th ed.) by Schmidt and Brown, page 408, “Ranking the Evidence” and page 409, “Evidence Hierarchy,” figure 15-1
Evidence Summary
After completing your literature review, you need to critically read and review each research article. Your goal is to write about and summarize the four articles, not to write about the actual topic of the articles. The summary should briefly and concisely summarize the four articles. You can do this separately – one paragraph for each article. It should include the following for each research article: the general topic, purpose, research question, level of evidence, method/design, and findings/results/conclusion. The questions below should be answered:
· What is the topic?
· What is the purpose of the research?
· What is the research question?
· What is the level of evidence of the article?
· What method or design was used?
· What were the findings/results/conclusions of the research?
Clinical Recommendation
Develop a clinical recommendation based on the evidence summary which addresses/answers your clinical question. The recommendation should be clear and supported by your evidence summary. It should reflect and be based on all four of the research articles. When addressing/answering your clinical question, you are really making a recommendation for a practice change. Noting the level of evidence pyramid, level 1 or 2 research provides the highest evidence to support a potential change in practice.
References
On a separate page, use APA formatting to correctly reference your scholarly article(s) from your introduction and the four research articles from your literature review.
