Description This course is a survey of modern thought from the French Revolution onwards. The threads of social change will be followed through historical and literary approaches, focusing primarily on relevant thought patterns and philosophies that helped to bring about social changes. Particular attention will be given to the socio-political challenges through the 19th and 20th centuries as impacting Christian faith and philosophy; elements such as nationalism, liberalism, egalitarianism, communism, imperialism, etc. Classes will focus primarily upon ideas that affect us as a society today to narrow the scope and allow for active discussion and intellectual development within specific themes encompassed in the reading assignments. Thesis Papers Students will respond to a literary piece’s reflexive of historical issues discussed in class and found in the textbook. Content: In 4-5 pages, students will develop a thesis about this novel in the class (Cry, the Beloved Country. The thesis will relate the novel to the Western Civilization experience; the defense of the thesis will synthesize themes such as love, hope, faith, impact of industrial revolution, compassion, and love of the country or events in the novel with historical knowledge. Defending paragraphs must be organized to support the thesis. Citation of pages will be sought for specifics. Format: Students will type this paper and save it as a Word Document (use “Save As:” Word 97-2003 Document). Use Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, one-inch margins (academic standard). MLA style is recommended, though students may select from a style appropriate for their field of study and use it consistently.
