The Power to Talk
Guidelines for RESPONSE ESSAYS SUMMARY-ANALYSIS-RESPONSE ESSAYS You will be required to write scholarly response essays on some assigned readings. The following webpage has excellent information on how to write summary and reaction essays, however, please ignore the information about an ANALYSIS essay (it refers to analyzing the writing from an English/literature perspective — how well is it written). The analysis that you will be doing refers to how the reading relates to and furthers your understanding of business communications. https://owlcation.com/academia/How-to-Write-a-Summary-Analysis-and-Response-Essay courtesy of OWLCATION and Virginia Kearney General Grading Rubric – Summary/Response Essays Score Value SUMMARY 30 ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE 30 GRAMMAR/ENGLISH MECHANICS 20 FORMAT/ APA STYLE/ TONE 20 100 A SUMMARY should state, in your own words, the main information, or argument (not a complete rehash of the writing) of another writer/speaker. It should be general and concise. Summaries should demonstrate that you understand the main points of the work. The ANALYSIS/REACTION/RESPONSE should indicate how the work furthered your understanding of points made in the course readings, textbook, discussions, presentations, or lectures. The reaction section requires that you consider how you think and feel about a topic and how it relates to business communications. Your opinion is important here, but IT MUST be informed by what you have read. If you make statements that are outside the realm of the what is covered in the readings, textbook, discussions, presentations, or lectures, you must cite a reference to document your argument (or thinking/feeling). QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER What emotions did the work arouse in you? Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue? Did it change your perspective in any way? How is this useful/informative for business communication? These questions are simply starting points they do not need to be addressed directly.
