Summary

The purpose of this assignment is to decide and propose your desired topic for your Capstone.

The Capstone will be a problem and solution research paper. Therefore, you will be responsible for picking a problem within the criminal justice system. Be sure to select something that interests you as you will be working on this over the course of the semester.

Instructions

Once you have selected a topic, you will be responsible for finding at least 3 acceptable sources discussing the topic (see below for discussion of acceptable sources). Then you are expected to construct a brief write up proposing the topic.

Your assignment MUST include the following elements:

·      A brief introduction to the topic.

·      Why is this topic relevant?

o   How is this a problem in the criminal justice system?

o   Why is this important?

o   What impacts has this problem had on the criminal justice system and society?

·      A conclusion wrapping up the points discussed.

Your assignment must meet the following additional requirements.

·      The proposal should be, at minimum, 2 pages in length and typed (cover page, headings, blank lines, reference page, etc. will not count towards the page count).

·      The paper should be double spaced, with size 12 Times New Roman font, and 1 inch margins.

·      Any sources utilized must be properly referenced and cited in text.

·      APA formatting guidelines should be followed.

o   Utilize the paper checklist and power point provided on the course website.

·      The paper must have a cover page, running head, and reference page.

o   No abstract is required.

·      Do not write the paper from a first person or subjective standpoint.

o   This should be an objective proposal.

o   Personal experiences, opinions, beliefs, etc. should not be included.

·      No quotations are allowed, the entirety of the proposal must be paraphrased, with appropriate citations.

o   Acceptable sources include peer-reviewed articles, government reports, organizational reports, court decisions, and codified law.

§  Keep in mind that at least 15 of your sources for your final Capstone must be peer-reviewed journal articles.

o   You may use news or magazine articles if they help to highlight the current state of the problem.

§  However, for your final paper you cannot have more than 5 sources that are news or magazine articles.

o   For this paper government websites, organizational websites, edited books, and textbooks cannot be used.

o   Additional unacceptable sources include, but are not limited to, videos, movies, documentaries, television shows, Wikipedia, Biography.org, About.com, Yahoo, Google, Murderpedia, Blogs, CrimeMuseum.org, unverified webpages, etc.

o   Keep in mind that is it impossible to list all types of unacceptable sources. Therefore, if you are unsure if a source is acceptable, email it to me.
