Evaluating Evidence/Research Narrative

When researching the controversy over organic foods versus the inorganic/conventionally grown foods, I began my search on the ASU library website. From there I was guided into a database search where I came across EBSCOhost, a powerful online reference database. EBSCOhost then lead me to the Academic Search Premier database where I found three separate sources that provide critical information in learning about the controversy.

The first source I came across was a magazine article/periodical, written by Deborah Rich, called “Not all Apples Are Created Equal.” The MLA format of the source reads as follows: Rich, Deborah. “Not All Appled Are Created Equal.” Earth Island Journal 23.1 (2008): 26-30. Academic Search Premier. Web. 3 Nov. 2016.

The second source I found through the ASU library database was a newspaper article titled “Organic Food Worth the Price? (Lazarus, David. “Organic Food Worth Price?” Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, Calif., 2015.)” In this article author David Lazarus weighs the value of organic food against the increased price.

The third source I found through the same database was an academic journal by Charles Benbrook and Christine McCullum-Gomez titled “Organic vs. Conventional Farming. (Benbrook, Charles, and Christine McCullum-Gomez. “Journal of the American Dietetic Association.” Organic vs. Conventional Farming 5.109 (2009): n. pag. Web. 3 Nov. 2009.)” This article focused on the growing process of different crops, including tomatoes, and the specific affects of the different processes. The first aspect of this source that I noticed was the credibility of both authors. Benbrook and McCullum-Gomez both have PhDs and have written various articles on the science behind different foods and the processes creating them. Benbrook is the chief scientist at The Organic Center and McCullum-Gomez is a food and nutrition consultant. Both have extremely specialized backgrounds in this field. They have also used other academic journals, primary sources, and website articles backed by other credible researchers to support their findings. Even though the article is seven years old, farming practices have not changed substantially leaving this information relevant to today. Additionally, they are responding to a previous article written about conventional farming processes that doe not take a stance, but simply investigates the issue. Although this article is not very long, I found their findings and information to be incredibly thought provoking and debatable. This added to my passion over the controversy and provided me with a lot of insight on the issue. Overall, my evaluation of this article focused on currency, accuracy, author credentials, author stance, author specialization, and relevance.  In my opinion this source is a valid and credible illustration of organic vs. conventional farming practices and will ultimately help me in writing my WP2.
