A Raisin in the Sun Assignment | Essay Help Services
PAPER #1: A RAISIN IN THE SUN In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family all have particular dreams. These dreams, and the very nature of having a dream (meaning in this case a plan for a happy, fulfilling life) are directly tied to the play’s title, which comes from the Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem” (alternatively titled “A Dream Deferred”). In a paper 4-5 pages in length, discuss the Younger’s dream for a better life, focusing on some specific topics: Identity the nature and specifics of each of the adult Younger’s particular dream. For example, what Is Walter’s dream? Mama’s? Give examples from the text. Quote particular passages of dialogue from the play that let us know the details of these individual dreams. Do any of the Younger family’s dreams conflict with one another? For example, are Benetha’s (Bennie) dreams in conflict with her Grandmother’s, or other members of the family? What do the dreams of the Younger family members tell us about the larger themes of the play?HINT: The answer to this question might be where you want to focus your thesis.Consider particularly the relationship between the play and the poem by Langston Hughes. What does it mean to have a “dream deferred”? Why must the Youngers defer their dreams? Do research into the play’s origins. What was happening in history at the time Hansberry wrote the play that might have led her to write it in the first place? Also, research the critical reception to the play. Why is it considered such a significant piece of American literature and theatre history? REQUIREMENTS: 4-5 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font. MLA format and Works Cited page.
