Adolescents are chemically imbalanced
Adolescents are chemically imbalanced to begin with, so without the proper coping mechanisms many adolescents become depressed.
Depression is suspected when the adolescent uses words such as down, sad, low, blue, hopeless, worried, bored, or discouraged and exhibits several of the following symptoms:
•Change in weight or appetite
•Insomnia or hypersomnia
•Decreased energy or fatigue
•Loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities
•Out-of-proportion feelings of self-reproach or guilt
•Difficulty concentrating; declining school performance
•Preoccupation with death or suicidal ideation (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, pg. 525)
“Children and adolescents may be more likely to have symptoms like unexplained aches and pains, irritability and social withdrawal”
